水浒传 is a novel attributed to Shi Nai'an (In fact, if you had studied 水浒传 for years, you will find that Shi Nai'an's not a person but a pseudonym of many people, the reason why I say so is that there's no such a person in any historical document until modern age) and one of the Four Great Classical Novels.
There're 57 things about 水浒传.

青少年版水浒传 is suited to children/beginner.
水浒传 is the original version. There'll be a bit hard if you read more books after you finish 青少年版水浒传. There's a far cry from 水浒传 and 青少年版水浒传.

新编宣和遗事前集宋刻本 A lot of Character prototype of 水浒传 is from this historical records. Ancient Chinese is hard to read.

黑水浒 A flimflam book with many conspiracy theories ... In Chinese forums about 水浒传, it's allowed to read but no discuss.

插增本简本水浒存文辑较 Almost 800 pages, differents between the details of versions.

贼水浒 and 贼三国 are two network novels of modern age, different with most of Chinese network novels, they're archaistic (although they're network novels). 贼水浒 tell that dead heroes uprised because of 秦广王 (a god that really exist in the legend, he control the First Palace of Hell)'s persecute, and 贼三国, just as its name implies, about dead characters of 水浒传 and 三国演义 intrigue against each other. Two books are both wonderful.

Hi, I'm an editor of Sinolingua and I'm working on the Abridged Chinese Classic Series. The abridged version of Water Margin（水浒传） contains 40,000 words can be read by elementary level students of Chinese with a 2,500-word vocabulary(HSK5) or can be used as an aid to reading the original. Each chapter is followed by a list of words and commentary notes both in Chinese and English, and several study questions. It will be published  in December 2014.  I hope this book will be a good source for you.

I'm in the US not Australia and therefore know absolutely nothing about the Australian university system. Perhaps you should start another thread asking about Aussie schools.

 

Though most people to these forums ask about Chinese schools not the other way around. It doesn't hurt to ask.
