The abridged version of Water Margin（水浒传） contains 40,000 words can be read by elementary level students of Chinese with a 2,500-word vocabulary(HSK5) or can be used as an aid to reading the original. Each chapter is followed by a list of words and commentary notes both in Chinese and English, and several study questions. It will be published in December 2014. I'm in the US not Australia and therefore know absolutely nothing about the Australian university system. Perhaps you should start another thread asking about Aussie schools.
