ralphmat123 Posted July 19, 2014 at 11:41 AM Report Share Posted July 19, 2014 at 11:41 AM Hi there, Today a friend asked me in Chinese "你会明白了吗" to ask me if I had understood what they said. I replied "会了” but they said you have to use 明白了 I'm sure they're right but how do you know which verb to repeat to say yes and no? And also I assume it's correct to repeat the 了 because the question used it? Thanks
ZoxGuo Posted July 19, 2014 at 11:52 AM Report Share Posted July 19, 2014 at 11:52 AM We don't use “你会明白了吗” to ask if somebody understand, eh, I mean, at least not me ... seriously, I even don't think “你会明白了吗”'s correct. Most time we use “你明白了吗”. When we use 会, the situation is that ask you can you do something. It's okay that you use 了.
Divato Posted July 19, 2014 at 12:18 PM Report Share Posted July 19, 2014 at 12:18 PM I guess your friend wanted to say 你明白了吗 or 你会了吗 instead of 你会明白了吗 You can simply say 嗯 to express Yes in both situation. Otherwise, you need to say 明白了 or 会了. Other Example 1 你懂了吗 Ans: 懂了 or 不懂 Other Example 2 你知道了吗 Ans: 知道了 or 不知道
Pedroski Posted August 7, 2014 at 03:33 AM Report Share Posted August 7, 2014 at 03:33 AM 当然也可以回答‘是’或‘是的’,英语的‘yes’只是古英语 ‘ge si = so be it'
Lu Posted August 7, 2014 at 07:38 PM Report Share Posted August 7, 2014 at 07:38 PM Pedroski, you're right, 是/不是 works as well, although to me that adds some emphasis. Perhaps next time you can reply in English? Many people on these forums are still learning Chinese and don't understand everything yet.
