New Members Jack Koppa Posted July 20, 2014 at 01:55 AM New Members Report Posted July 20, 2014 at 01:55 AM Hey all, Writing an essay where I've already used "虽然...,但是..." a lot. I'm trying to say something along the lines of "Even though it was really difficult, I still really liked it." As I understand it, something like "即使...,仍旧..." might work. In this situation, perhaps with a 了, can it refer to something that actually happened (even though), rather than just a hypothetical situation that hasn't occurred (even if)? Many thanks for the help. Quote
MPhillips Posted July 20, 2014 at 03:14 AM Report Posted July 20, 2014 at 03:14 AM I believe a clause which begins 即使 must refer to a hypothetical situation. For an elegant variation on "虽然 . . .,但是 . . ." you could try the construction "尽管 A, 还是/仍然 B". For example "尽管(jin3guan3)数学很难, 我还是要学的”. They discuss this construction at greater length on the Chinese Grammar Wiki site which has a link on the left-hand side of the Forum's home-page--just search by 尽管. They consider 尽管 similar to 虽然 and between "although" & "even though", but tending more towards "even though". 1 Quote

The link to that specific page on the wiki, for anyone interested. I'll be making plenty of use of that wiki in the future, so thanks twice over for your help. 谢谢! Quote
