Lu Posted July 21, 2014 at 09:08 PM Report Posted July 21, 2014 at 09:08 PM You usually just say 'Huh?' Not sure what the character is. This is considered very impolite where I come from, but completely normal in China. If you want to say more, you can also use 请再说一遍 or 请你再说一遍, 'Could you repeat that please?' Don't say 对不起, that's not used in this context. 对不起 and 不好意思 are more for when you have actually wronged the other person. 1 Quote
Shelley Posted July 21, 2014 at 10:38 PM Report Posted July 21, 2014 at 10:38 PM Interesting, I took the last sentence straight from Pleco. Is it like this with all Chinese people - not using sorry the way we do in English? As a non native Chinese speaker would they understand what you mean or would it be really the wrong thing to say? If so I wonder why it is an example sentence in Pleco? Quote
Basil Posted July 22, 2014 at 01:06 AM Report Posted July 22, 2014 at 01:06 AM Try not to say sorry too much, it makes you seem very weird. Grunt or make other such inflected noises in minor situations, shout and scream that you're going to stick the person concerned on weibo in major ones. Quote
arrow Posted July 22, 2014 at 02:10 AM Report Posted July 22, 2014 at 02:10 AM Just turn your ears to the speaker and make a "what?" face or simply say "什么?" / "啥" will do the job. To say "哈?"、"啊?" to someone may make him feel unpleasant, but should achieve the same purpose. To say "不好意思,再说一遍好吗?" “不好意思,我没听清" is the decent way to do this. 1 Quote
Lu Posted July 22, 2014 at 08:05 AM Report Posted July 22, 2014 at 08:05 AM I had a classmate back at BLCU who, her Chinese not being very good yet, would say 对不起 a lot when on the phone with her language partner. This mostly confused the language partner, who didn't understand what she was so sorry about. Actually Shelley and Arrow are right, you can use it as 对不起/不好意思,请你再说一遍, but not by itself. Quote
Pokarface Posted July 24, 2014 at 07:19 PM Report Posted July 24, 2014 at 07:19 PM I'd say, "duìbuqǐ, wǒ bù míngbai". I'm sorry, I don't understand. (Hopefully, whoever I say this to, repeats what they said before, haha). Quote
