Where Should I Live in Harbin?

Hi, I'm moving to Harbin this fall and have been asked where I would like to live by my employer. I need advice on most convenient places to live and what kind of apartment I should expect. I'm going to make a modest salary teaching English. They asked if I want to live in the old or new quarter and I'm not sure what this means. Where are the safe but affordable areas? What areas should I avoid? Is there a subway?

Do you have the address for your school? 

 

Unless it's very near a metro station, you'll want to be nearby to avoid a lot of costly travel.

I can only answer your last question,

 

There's currently only one subway line in Harbin. The most practical way to get around the city is by bus or cab (or just walk).
