In the UK it sounds like the "private dorms" that crop up around Univerisities that anyone can live in but they target students and young professionals mostly. Essentially if you aren't in dorms then your only choice is to live in normal apartment buildings. Within those are local Chinese people and also foreigners. Many of the foreigners in Wudaokou end up sharing apartments. Some of the Chinese apartments are also shared amongst strangers but a lot more seemed to just be families and retired people. Of course, the number of foreigners in and around Wudaokou means that some apartment buildings have a lot of foreign residents in them but it's not like how you describe. 1 Quote
