“遍行天下 心仪广西”英语翻译征集公告

 

　　为了更好地开展广西旅游对外宣传推广，打造“遍行天下 心仪广西”旅游整体形象品牌，广西壮族自治区旅游发展委员会面向全社会公开征集广西旅游整体形象宣传口号“遍行天下心仪广西”的英文翻译。现将有关事项公告如下：

 

　　一、征集内容：

 

　　“遍行天下 心仪广西”的英文翻译。

 

 

　　二、翻译要求：

 

　　（一）翻译作品应符合英语规范，语句简短，文字精炼，通俗易懂，朗朗上口。

 

　　（二）翻译作品应完整表达“遍行天下 心仪广西”含义，突出表达对广西的“心仪”之意，可直译或意译。

 

 

　　三、奖励办法：

 

　　对被我委原文采用的英语翻译，给予人民币伍仟元的奖励或相当于人民币5000元的广西旅游配套行程。

 

 

　　四、投稿方式：

　　应征作品请著名作者姓名、职业、地址及联系方式，直接发电子邮件至：scc5529709@163.com。

It's in China where many people don't seem to appreciate proper Internet etiquette.

I'm not sure if it's Internet etiquette but more wanting to give a sense of authenticity.

 

What's to stop someone seeing that announcement on some unknown government site, copying and pasting the contents to a well-known site, but then swapping out the submission email address with their own email address.  That person gets sent all the submissions, which he forwards on to the real address, maximising his own chances of winning, which he then takes all for himself.

 

That was actually my first thought when I saw the post you linked to on tianya, and is why I went searching to see if there was actually a .gov.cn announcement.  If the original submission had something like translationcompetition@gxta.gov.cn it would have come across as slightly more authentic.

Rather than translating it, wouldn't it be better to have an advertising agency come up with a better slogan? (I guess that might cost more than 5000rmb though).

@fanglu, crowdsourcing is all the rage.  As a fellow Australian I'm sure you remember the Vegemite 2.0 debacle.

I wonder if the winning entry will even be chosen by someone who speaks English (let alone has any insight into what makes a good tourism slogan for an English-speaking audience).

 

They'll probably chose something like "travel everywhere, heart admires Guangxi".

Re: the email address, I'm working in the Hainan tourism department and none of my coworkers has any kind of official email address. Everybody, including the director, just uses personal email. So this isn't really surprising. Actually, most of them just use qq or wechat to communicate with each other, and transfer files via USB when necessary.
