正方 = assertion ?? Dictionary gives it as 'square'. Is it actually an abbreviation of a longer phrase??

Get a better dictionary.  Specifically I would recommend the Xiandai Hanyu Guifan Cidian, which gives the following definition:

 

在辩论中对论题持赞成或肯定意见的一方（跟“反方”相区别)

 

Basically, it's a debating term for the affirmative side (compared to 反方 which is the negative side).

 

'方' can be thought of as side or party (e.g. 甲方，乙方 in contracts etc).
