Bird in a Forest Posted August 19, 2014 at 03:48 PM Report Posted August 19, 2014 at 03:48 PM Hello all,You'd be surprised at how difficult it is to find information on this on the web. I did a fair search and couldn't find anything useful. (It always comes up with articles about Chinese students being better at Maths rather than articles on math vocabulary for Chinese O.o).Anyway, if we could gather a list of useful Mathematical terms in this thread I think that would be a great resource for everyone. For starters: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division (How to say 1 + 1, 2 X 3, 4 / 5, etc.). Is equal to, is more than, less than, more than and equal to, less than and equal to etc. Fractions Units (Including m/s^2 etc.) Exponents (to the power of) Routing (Square route, cube route) Algebraic Terms (How to say Algebra would be a good start XD, factorise, expand, d.o.t, etc.) Trigonometric Terms (Trigonometry, sin(), cos(), tan(), etc.) Degrees, Minutes, Seconds Probability Calculus Terms Other possibly useful terms that we could use in real life Thank you everyone Quote

Kanjiology Posted August 19, 2014 at 04:06 PM Report Posted August 19, 2014 at 04:06 PM I have in my possession a booklet called 数理化常用词汇 - 汉英对照手册 issued by the university where I study at which is given to science and math students. It has a lot of math, physics, and chemistry terms. I took a few hastily pictures of it since its late, but hope I could lead you in the right direction, I could take more pictures if there is enough interest. Edit: Michaelyus's link has a lot of good information, I might take advantage of that. Thanks for the link. Quote

ZhangJiang Posted August 20, 2014 at 05:05 AM Report Posted August 20, 2014 at 05:05 AM Would be 米每平方秒, the slash is read as 每 yes, I left out the 每, but what is a 平方秒? Quote
MPhillips Posted August 20, 2014 at 09:17 AM Report Posted August 20, 2014 at 09:17 AM @Zhangjiang--It's no wonder you haven't heard of "d.o.t.", I don't think such an acronym exists in mathematics, my husband teaches math & has never heard of it. I think the original poster might have meant "dot product". Quote

anonymoose Posted August 20, 2014 at 07:09 PM Report Posted August 20, 2014 at 07:09 PM 平方X is X2 so 平方秒 is 秒2, in other words s2. Quote
Bird in a Forest Posted August 24, 2014 at 04:10 AM Author Report Posted August 24, 2014 at 04:10 AM This is great guys D.O.T. is difference of two squares. I was taught it in school, I thought it was standard XD Quote
Bird in a Forest Posted August 24, 2014 at 04:11 AM Author Report Posted August 24, 2014 at 04:11 AM So: (x + 4)(x-4) = x^2 - 16 Quote
