Maths Vocabulary

Hello all,

You'd be surprised at how difficult it is to find information on this on the web. I did a fair search and couldn't find anything useful. (It always comes up with articles about Chinese students being better at Maths rather than articles on math vocabulary for Chinese O.o).

Anyway, if we could gather a list of useful Mathematical terms in this thread I think that would be a great resource for everyone.

For starters:

  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division (How to say 1 + 1, 2 X 3, 4 / 5, etc.).
  • Is equal to, is more than, less than, more than and equal to, less than and equal to etc.
  • Fractions
  • Units (Including m/s^2 etc.)
  • Exponents (to the power of)
  • Routing (Square route, cube route)
  • Algebraic Terms (How to say Algebra would be a good start XD, factorise, expand, d.o.t, etc.)
  • Trigonometric Terms (Trigonometry, sin(), cos(), tan(), etc.)
  • Degrees, Minutes, Seconds
  • Probability
  • Calculus Terms
  • Other possibly useful terms that we could use in real life

Thank you everyone :D

I have in my possession a booklet called 数理化常用词汇 - 汉英对照手册 issued by the university where I study at which is given to science and math students. It has a lot of math, physics, and chemistry terms. I took a few hastily pictures of it since its late, but hope I could lead you in the right direction, I could take more pictures if there is enough interest. post-49942-0-37327800-1408464316_thumb.jpgpost-49942-0-44395100-1408464326_thumb.jpgpost-49942-0-18806800-1408464333_thumb.jpgpost-49942-0-23387500-1408464340_thumb.jpg

Edit: Michaelyus's link has a lot of good information, I might take advantage of that. Thanks for the link.

Thanks Kanjiology, the pictures you posted are very useful. If you have more of them, it would be great if you could share them with us when you have the time :)

Hmmm... methinks it's related to your location. Just checked it, came back positive for poisoning. Whoops.

With some guessing:

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division (How to say 1 + 1, 2 X 3, 4 / 5, etc.).

Fractions

分数

Units (Including m/s^2 etc.)

单位(米 平方秒? s refers to a second?)

Exponents (to the power of)

Routing (Square route, cube route)

Algebraic Terms (How to say Algebra would be a good start XD, factorise, expand, d.o.t, etc.)

代数 (factorise因式分解,展开,I don't know what d.o.t is)

Trigonometric Terms (Trigonometry, sin(), cos(), tan(), etc.)

Degrees, Minutes, Seconds

Probability

概率

Calculus Terms

微积分,dy/dx is微分,big s 积分

Other possibly useful terms that we could use in real life

Would be 米每平方秒, the slash is read as 每

yes, I left out the 每, but what is a 平方秒?

@Zhangjiang--It's no wonder you haven't heard of "d.o.t.", I don't think such an acronym exists in mathematics, my husband teaches math & has never heard of it. I think the original poster might have meant "dot product".

Thx for the explanation. I've totally forgotten the dot product(数量积) and the cross product(叉乘) and had to look them up.

On its own it's meaningless but m/s^2 is actually the SI unit for acceleration

平方X is X2 so 平方秒 is 秒2, in other words s2.

This is great guys :D

D.O.T. is difference of two squares. I was taught it in school, I thought it was standard XD
