Edward Phie Posted August 30, 2014 at 12:17 AM Report Posted August 30, 2014 at 12:17 AM Hi, I'm a CSC receiver students from Inonesia. next month on 8th I will fly from guangzhou to nanchang using china eastern airlines yes I already bought a ticket..As I read the website (which after googling find out that it's not user friendly) I decide to ask your experience and humbly ask for your suggestion.. I will travel with economy ticket (which is 20kg free baggage allowance) but I am sure will have excess baggage around 10kgs my question is 1. I heard that is special regulation for students how it is worked anyone know? (I bought the ticket using ctrip) 2. If I must pay how much it cost per kg (there are so many confusing information there are who said 1000 RMB and there are also 1,5% of the full priced economy ticket per kgs (which is 2nd option be lot of cheaper around 200 RMB for 10kgs) 3. I'll bring backpack to cabin and a 16inch suitcase is it alright? (I mean according to web economy only granted 1 piece) 4.Will the cabin luggage will be weighed (I'll probably stuffed all of my heavy things to my backpack and 16 inch luggage cabin) Quote
abcdefg Posted August 30, 2014 at 01:23 AM Report Posted August 30, 2014 at 01:23 AM 4.Will the cabin luggage will be weighed (I'll probably stuffed all of my heavy things to my backpack and 16 inch luggage cabin) I've flown China Eastern inside China many times. Never had my cabin luggage weighed. It's a good plan to stuff all your heaviest things into those bags. Books and such. I'm not aware of a special checked baggage allowance for students. It would be extremely surprising. You might ask China Eastern about that as well as asking them for help in figuring out how much the overweight baggage charges are. They usually have pretty good English-language telephone customer support. -------------------------------- Edited to add: See my post #19 in this older thread for excess baggage rate as of December, 2010: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/30008-extra-baggage-fee-for-domestic-flights/ The rest of that thread has some other useful comments, relevant to your situation. m000gle Posted August 30, 2014 at 05:51 AM Report Posted August 30, 2014 at 05:51 AM 1. Some airlines have promotional extra baggage allowance (e.g. Hainan Airlines on certain routes between China and North America), but I've yet to find any specific information about China Eastern Airlines domestic travel having the same thing. Check with your airline. 2. Depending on how much over the limit you are, you will typically fit one of two categories. You can pay a fee for oversize/overweight checked luggage, up to a maximum size. You can also simply pay for a second piece of checked baggage. Rates will vary between airlines and fare classes, as will any options beyond these two. Check with your airline. 3. Most airlines allow piece of carry on baggage (e.g. backpack or your 16 inch suitcase) as well as one personal item (e.g. purse, laptop, camera bag). Check with your airline. 4. These are very rarely weighed, but if they exceed the dimensions, you may be required to check them at your own expense. I'm sorry if I sound like a broken record; but the only way to know the answer to any of these questions, regardless of whether your are a student or flying domestic/international, is to check with your airline. They will know which rules apply to that specific airline, route, ticket fare class etc and whether any other options or special deals exist. They are also the only authority on the matter and the only one whose answer carries any weight. While potentially interesting, our experiences would be anecdotal at best, and pale in comparison to the concrete answers a 15 minute phone call with your airline will provide. Best of luck 1 Quote

abcdefg Posted September 1, 2014 at 05:31 AM Report Posted September 1, 2014 at 05:31 AM (About cabin luggage) -- 4. Also, when carrying my heavily-loaded backpack at the boarding gate check point, I try to pretend it is light as a feather. Quote
Lu Posted September 2, 2014 at 09:26 AM Report Posted September 2, 2014 at 09:26 AM I've never had my carry-on luggage weighed with any airline, but I never exceeded the dimension allowance either. I imagine that might be a bigger issue, so I hope your backpack is not too big. And carrying as if it's light as a feather is a good idea too, I have a friend who did that with consistent success. Way back when I first came to Beijing there was a special student allowance too, but as m000gle says: ask the airline. Quote
Edward Phie Posted September 2, 2014 at 11:26 PM Author Report Posted September 2, 2014 at 11:26 PM Well I will try to call the airlines this evening, hope their english are good because even If I can speak chinese a little I don't know to much about terminology that is used in airport or plane Quote
Silent Posted September 3, 2014 at 12:04 AM Report Posted September 3, 2014 at 12:04 AM While potentially interesting, our experiences would be anecdotal at best, and pale in comparison to the concrete answers a 15 minute phone call with your airline will provide. In principle I agree, contact the airline for the official rules. In reality however customer service makes mistakes and there may be a significant difference between official policy and reality. E.g. many airlines by default waive a few kilo's of excess luggage, special luggage fee's are regularly forgotten specially when flying from third world countries and hand luggage is only rarely weighed (but sometimes they do) and a little friendly debate may also help to flex the rules. For the more rare situations the personnel usually doesn't know the rules either. So best to know the relevant rules to protect yourself against random decisions and it may be worth while to take some calculated risks. E.g. too heavy hand luggage and moderate excess luggage but know and be prepared to bear the consequences if the calculated risks don't work out the way you hoped for. If you know you'll have a lot of excess luggage it may be worthwhile to book this in advance (if the airliner allows too). This is usually a lot cheaper. Quote
