I think it means the same as 的地方 but is found in a higher, more literary register. Grammar-wise 之 is a possessive particle, here its function is just like that of 的, allowing what comes before it to modify what comes after it. A good working translation of 之处 might be something like "aspect/s", for instance, 不同之处 "difference/s" (literally "different aspect/s"),优越之处 "advantage/s", "superior aspect/s"or "feature/s", 吸引人之处 "attractive feature/s", "attraction/s".
