13cyberphoenix Posted September 11, 2014 at 06:43 PM Author Report Posted September 11, 2014 at 06:43 PM I am willing to pay, if its not too expensive. I just thought chinesepod was a big waste of money and time I already know about anki and think its alright. But most ofnthe decks focus on just the characters, whereas I am looking for cards that include words that are commonly used in.CONVERSATION, not those common in books I tried the cards in pleco, but i think anki is better as it tests you more often on the cards yoh get wrong, and vice versa Quote

It has to be said that pleco has many parameters that can be configured to your liking. It is not fixed. There are lots of things you can change. Quote
ouyangjun Posted September 12, 2014 at 04:18 PM Report Posted September 12, 2014 at 04:18 PM I used Anki for years. It is a great program, but it took me too long to actually maintain and add cards. I added cards manually as i came across the words in study or real life, so it always required manually adding of the words including definition, etc. Once my card list got to a certain point it became way too burdensome to maintain. Due to this I quit doing flashcards for around a year. About a year ago I picked up on flashcards again using Pleco... way easier to maintain. I really like Pleco just because of the ease to add a card to the list and then pick the dictionary definition you want to study. I try to keep my flashcard learning to less than 10 minutes a day using it as a quick refresher of new vocab, and lean on actual reading to develop and enforce my vocabulary. Quote

I checked the instruction manual, and it says you have to go to "Commands" to repeat incorrect cards. However, I do not see that in my pleco app. Perhaps this option is only available if you pay for it? I am using the free pleco version Quote
imron Posted September 13, 2014 at 10:59 PM Report Posted September 13, 2014 at 10:59 PM I am firmly of the opinion that free pleco is not the real pleco. Anyone who enthuses about the benefits of pleco is almost certainly using the paid version. I'd recommend at least the flash cards and one of the better dictionaries - the ABC Chinese-English dictionary, and if your Chinese is up to it the Xiandai guifan Chinese-Chinese dictionary. Quote
