很多品牌就是通过电视广告风行中国的。

通过电视广告风行中国的。

through TV advertising popular China

Seems to me like there is something like '在。。。。里‘ missing here, but I'm sure the Chinese is good. So 风行 = 'become popular in' ???

I would like to see how this may be expressed differently using something like '在。。。。里‘ for the reason stated above:  ‘风行中国’ = 'popular China' or 'catch on China' or 'become famous China'. I am assured this is good Chinese, but to my ear it screams out for a locative element such as a preposition. So I would like to see it written with such an element.

Can you do that?

You can write like this

很多品牌就是通过电视广告 中国 成为 风行的。

or

很多品牌就是通过电视广告 中国(地域)范围内 变为 风行的。

The fact is stated, but using words more than necessary.

There is an ellipsis in your sentence.

We tend to omit the word 於 (in, at, or on) in many expressions, for which I can't provide any rule, but here are some examples:

大白(於)天下

享譽(於)全球

對飲(於)月下

身陷(於)困境

In your case, it is 風行(於)中國.

Kenny is right to me. And it seems the rule is that the verb before 於 should be intransitive and the latter part a location/time period.

Besides, you can't say "成为 风行的" or "变为 风行的" because 风行 is a verb not an adjective.
