Starting a new life

Hi all,

I've been in Harbin for a short while, and will still be here for a few weeks before returning to Belgium. I'm posting here as this seems to be a lively discussion. About myself, I'm 25 and studying Mandarin at Bincai college in Harbin.

If there's anyone, despite the cold, willing to go for a drink or event this weekend, let me know. I'd be happy to meet new people!

Also, anyone knows if there's this or next week some special events being organized in town?

Hope to see you around!

Robin

Hey everyone! Rebecca here, I'll be flying into Harbin next week to start a new teaching job. I'd love to get to know you guys and maybe plan some meet-ups. This city looks amazing, it seems like there's loads to do!

Now, I'd like to enlist you guys for help. Forgive me if this is the wrong place to do this, I'm new to these boards, but since this chat seems to have the most traffic I think it's the best place to ask. My company will help me find and sort out an apartment for myself, and from these forums and other websites I've found a lot of great information about renting an apartment in Harbin, BUT, that's not what I'm looking for. I always prefer to live with roommates, and I haven't found any forums or websites that facilitate roommate searches in this city.

So, Harbiners! Do you know anyone that would welcome a roommate or show interest in sharing a new apartment? Or know of any specific websites or places I can look? As for me, 20 / USA / F, I'm pretty neat and like to cook, and I won't have any trouble putting down whatever money for a deposit or rent. I have no preference for roomies, Chinese, foreign, guys, gals, whatever, I'm extremely flexible. I don't know the city layout very well, however, so I'm in the dark relative to location and public transport, but I think my school is located near the center. I'd like to stay relatively close to the center somewhere pretty cheap.

I realize this is kind of sketchy, but hey, it's China, what can you do. Please let me know if you have any relevant information or contacts, and feel free to ask me anything!

Thanks all for your attention and assistance! If this is out of line or inappropriate I apologize, just ignore me.  :P Really looking forward to chillin' out and lovin' life in Harbin.

I just got to Harbin about two weeks ago and I'm having a hard time figuring out where everything is, what there is to do etc. It would be really great to be able to meet some people and make some friends here.

hello house, i am new to this forum, and by extension, this thread. I will resume at the HIT by 29th for my MSc. I am coming from Africa and I am having quite a lot of reservations, but I hope you guys can help. Well, the first thing is that I do not want to be terribly depressed once I reach harbin and I hope to meet people, who knows, even meet some folks in this thread.

I am not going to be cut away from the outside world. And I need you guyz recommendation on the most reliable free or paid vpn that actually works in harbin or specifically, HIT. I am 6ft4 (still don't know how I will fit into the dorm bed), I intend to get some clothes once I am there. Clothes would be cheaper in china because the African clothiers import mainly from china afterall. But, would I find my size? especially shoes and trousers? I use a US size 13 or Europe's 46. my leg is not wide or something, would I be able to find my shoe sizes in harbin? what's the cost of a low-key movie ticket in harbin? Do the actors speak English or do they superimpose a chinese voice, cos I watch a hell lot of hollywood. thanks y'all. I am watching a lot of creepy stuffs on how people in china might threat a black, but I really think it is over-emphasized. Even back home, people like to have me around and I want to believe I would most likely not get a terrible treatment cos of pigmentation. can you guys expansiate please? And lastly, how do you guys find china girls?

I used to use Astrill but lately it has been very bad. I switched to ExpressVPN which seems ok, mostly, but it seems like all the providers have problems nowadays when it comes to China.

Maybe, maybe not. Clothes exported from China are often different than the ones sold in China. You can find cheap but often bad quality clothes, then you have all the well known international mid prize brands in the malls aimed at the middle class which cost pretty much the same as everywhere else and then you have the expensive brands that are, well, expensive.

what's the cost of a low-key movie ticket in harbin? Do the actors speak English or do they superimpose a chinese voice, cos I watch a hell lot of hollywood.

You can often find discounted tickets for as low as 10 to 20 yuan if you are not picky about where to go see a movie and go during weekdays. Normally tickets would be around 40 yuan. Foreign movies (read American) often have both options available - original track and voice over. Unfortunately a limited amount of foreign movies make it into the Chinese circulation each year. If you are content with the newest what-ever-marvel-superheroes-stuff then no problem, if you actually like cinema then what is running in China is going to be a downer.

And lastly, how do you guys find china girls?

In the end of the day, they are just like girls from any other country unless you plan to marry, then cultural and family things might prove to be complex. Often foreign guys seem to hang out with Chinese girls who are especially interested in meeting foreign guys. Personally I find those kinds of Chinese girls creepy and weird, but what ever rocks your boat. Just by asking that question, no offence, makes me think that you won't mind.

As for the other stuff, sorry but I cannot really help. Might add that while you might encounter some racism then so does every other foreigner in China. A lot of black people in Harbin. I've heard them complain but mostly they seem happy. Even other asians get special treatment in China and foreigners complain all the time about these things with each other - me included.
