Perhaps it would be more like "what you search for is right in front of you", in that it is a "fancy" way to say "在你面前". I would never respond to the question 诶，我的眼镜在哪里？ with 远在天边，近在眼前 unless I was trying (and likely failing as I usually do) to be funny/stupid. PS. there is no 吗 on the end of that question. Quote
