It would literally say:

He and she separation tohave ten of hours -le

I would understand:

(He and she) their separation has ten hours -le

More refined:

He and she have been separated for ten hours -le

is the first impression correct? : "Their separation has ten hours"

ty!

EDIT: and, what would happen if I would omit mentioning 了 at the end? just curious.

EDIT: how is  "他和她"  emotionally different from "他们" In the reading we already know it is a he and a she, I suppose it adds soapiness, but I have no idea in which way it does it (it is a short extract I read) thanks again.

"他和她"  emotionally different from "他们"

To me, I would say the former indicates that the guy broke up with the girl.  The latter just states they broke up, with no indication as to who did the breaking.

A nicer English gloss might read.

He broke up with her 10 hours ago.

When you say "he broke up with her just 10 hours ago", or "he broke up with her 10 hours ago already", I think you would use 有 like this:

他和她分手只有十个小时了

他和她分手已经有十个小时了

Not sure about the use of 有 in the OP's sentence, I think usually it would be omitted, but perhaps it suggests that the speaker has an opinion about the duration (probably "just 10 hours ago so she's pretty upset right now" ?).

I don't think that 他跟她分手了 and 她跟她分手了 is like English in most situations where "He broke up with her" means that the guy initiated.

The plain Chinese sentence doesn't indicate who initiated unless you're specifically answering a question where those two options are given:

"是他跟你分手还是你跟他分手?“

Otherwise, we can have things like:

“你跟他分手了?是谁提的?”
