继续成为

I  am assured that this is good Chinese. I can find lots of examples of '继续成为‘。 But I would not like to translate it as 'continue to become', I would rather simply use 'continue'.  Is that correct?

I personally think it's bad Chinese... but I get the logic.

If you become a market leader with one product, you still have to become a market leader for your next product in order to 继续成为 a market leader. People definitely do use this in writing apparently, I had to baidu it, but I think I would say （继续）保持市场领导者地位

Aha，so I'm not the only one who thinks it's bad Chinese! It was the 'logic' of it that I could not get.

 

A  becomes market leader, A is market leader, ergo A doesn't need to become market leader anymore.

 

Perhaps the man had in the back of his mind some yearly market figures, which show his company  regularly coming out on top. That was definitely not in my text.

When translate a phrase from one language to another, it's not necessary to be literal. In this particular sentence, I'd be quite happy to translate 继续成为 as "continue to be (a market leader)".

What if the meaning is to continue on our journey to become a market leader?  that was what i thought it meant.

"繼續成為" is a poor collocation and sounds weird here; "繼續保持領導（者）地位" is fine.

 

 

Edit: I did a Baidu search on ”繼續成為“ and got quite a number of results, in many of which, the phrase can simply be replaced by ”再度成為“ or "仍將是". "繼續成為" is as awkward as "continue to become".

I guess it depends on the context, but isn't 再度成为 different from 继续成为? Assuming 继续成为 is supposed to mean "continue on its journey to becoming...", isn't that different from 再度成为, which I interpret to mean "once again become"? In other words, it was in the top spot, lost it's place, and then got it back again.

Yes, these two phrases are different.

 

Assuming 继续成为 is supposed to mean "continue on its journey to becoming...",

"再度成為" means 再次成為 and that's all. In that process of which, it doesn't necessarily lose its place, for example:

 

1. 山西:出行问题今年继续成为政协委员关注焦点

山西:出行问题今年再度成为政协委员关注焦点 (It could have been that 出行問題 had been a focus last year)

 

2. 黄金业务有望继续成为国内银行的经营亮点

黃金業務有望再度成為國內銀行的經營亮點 (黃金業務起初是國內銀行經營的亮點，後來不是了（據報道），現在則有望再次成為亮點)

 

3. 墨西哥继续成为美国第三大石油供应国

墨西哥到底始終是美國第三大石油供應國還是地位下降後再次成為美國第三大石油供應國？不清楚。我猜應該一直是，如果這樣，當用「仍將是」；如果不是，當用「再度成為」。

 

4. 灵活稳健将继续成为宏观调控关键词

「靈活穩健」仍將是宏觀調控的關鍵詞

 

5. 黑莓:我们将继续成为移动的领导者

黑莓：我們仍將領導移動通訊產業

 

6. 我国维生素将继续成为全球产销领先者

我國維生素產業仍將領先全球

 

 

7. 香港继续成为浙江对外投资首选目的地

香港仍將是浙江對外投資之首選地

 

 

8. 中国继续成为巴西最大贸易伙伴

中國仍將是巴西最大貿易夥伴

 

PS: 如果所涉及的動作是一直持續的，譬如第三個例子，用「再度成為」則暗示動作有中斷；如果所涉及的動作為一次性的，或者不持續的，譬如第一個例子，則「再度成為」無法暗示動作是否有中斷。

Personally I don't think so. To me at least, it means continue to become.

 

Of course it means "continue to become". I was just borrowing tysond's wording to emphasise that I was interpreting "continue to become" as "continue on the process to becoming" rather than "once again become". In English "continue to become" could be interpreted in either of those ways.

"Continue to become" in English just sounds incorrect to me unless you were interrupted or you still have yet to become. I think that is because the nature of the word "become" is that once it's done, the result is a state rather than simply an event. If it's happened already once before, I don't think you can really use "continue to become" and maintain standard English.

Yes.  Also using "continue" seems to make the sentence stilted and boring.

In business we'd normally use a metaphor around journeys or drives or roads, or maybe talk about transformation.

 

"Innovation is what will allow us to continue our journey to become market leaders"

"Innovation is the key to our transformation to become market leaders"

"Innovation is pivotal in our ongoing journey to become a market leader".  

"Innovation will propel us down the road of becoming a market leader"

 

I think all of these capture the intended meaning of the sentence (given lack of context) in a way that an native speaker might use if giving a business speech.  I think the last one is nicest.

To be honest I think the original sentence is quite a bit more literal than that.
