This is apparently a German saying (I have never heard it before). Someone is looking for a Chinese version of it. Any suggestions?

'Don't brandish your weapon at your enemy, don't flash your money around in front of your friend.' with the basic meaning 'don't invite trouble'.

Thanks for that! Brilliant!

I must have got the wrong end of the stick, I thought the guy meant it was a German saying! Why do sticks have to have 2 ends?? Grrrrr.

They only have one end whilst still on the tree. Maybe you should go to the treetops for your Chinese rather than foraging on the ground.

Hey, I don't forage! I'm a hunter-gatherer! I gather hunters! A stick on tree is a branch! There is no Chinese on the tree top in front of my window, just 叶子! 怎么办啊!
