In the popular imagination, “草泥马” is now the correct word for alpaca. Everyone knows what a 草泥马 is, not everyone knows what a 羊驼 is. I've even seen mothers explaining to children “that's a 草泥马” (pointing to an alpaca).

I don't know the difference between llamas and alpacas. Wikipedia does though.

I think usually llamas are almost double the size of alpacas, and llamas have big hornshaped ears while alpacas have lil cat ears.

Alpacas have fine wool (suitable for making expensive clothes), while llamas have course wool (inferior to sheeps' wool).
