Mexes Posted October 28, 2014 at 06:03 PM Report Posted October 28, 2014 at 06:03 PM Hi all, I'm looking for Chinese films set between 1900 and 1920s, can anyone recommend any? I'm mainly looking for fashion, behaviour, and activity reasons. Many thanks! M Quote
victorhart Posted October 29, 2014 at 12:36 AM Report Posted October 29, 2014 at 12:36 AM Yes, Fearless is a very good movie starring Jet Li that is mostly set in the first decade of the 20th century. Quote
victorhart Posted October 29, 2014 at 12:38 AM Report Posted October 29, 2014 at 12:38 AM This awesome martial arts thriller is set in 1917: Dragon (Wu xia). Quote
imron Posted October 29, 2014 at 01:05 AM Report Posted October 29, 2014 at 01:05 AM Let the bullets fly (让子弹飞) is set in the 1920's. Not sure if that makes the cut or not. Quote
Yorin Posted October 29, 2014 at 01:02 PM Report Posted October 29, 2014 at 01:02 PM Raise the Red Lantern is set in the 1920's. I believe the beginning of Farewell My Concubine is set in the 1920's. Although it is not a Chinese movie, The Painted Veil takes place in China (and was shot in China), it is set in the 1920's. Quote
Shelley Posted October 29, 2014 at 11:00 PM Report Posted October 29, 2014 at 11:00 PM Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker. Set just before 1911, excellent fun. Quote
Yorin Posted October 30, 2014 at 01:09 AM Report Posted October 30, 2014 at 01:09 AM Forgot to mention a few ones... The beginning of The Soong Sisters takes place in the early 20th century. Then there is The Legend Is Born - Ip Man (known in Germany as Ip Man Zero). Obviously, The Last Emperor also partially takes place at the time, though it's not a Chinese movie. Quote
oceancalligraphy Posted October 30, 2014 at 05:22 AM Report Posted October 30, 2014 at 05:22 AM Once Upon a Time in China (黃飛鴻) might count as they were set in the late Qing (清) Dynasty. There are six movies in the series, mostly starring Jet Li, and were released in the 1990s. Quote
