In "呛着", meaning choke on food, is "着" pronounced as "zhe" or "zhao"?

zháo
①接触；挨上：上不～天，下不～地。
②感受；受到：～风丨～凉。
③燃烧，也指灯发光(跟[灭]相对)：炉子～得很旺丨天黑了，路灯都～了。
④用在动词后，表示已经达到目的或有了结果：睡～了丨打～了丨猜～了丨灯点～了。
⑤<方>入睡：一上床就～了。

 

我觉得应该是用于第四个情况，呛着了

zhe,着火 pronounced as "Zhao" meaning "on fire"

Although I'm not surprised if some native speakers say otherwise (I would actually be surprised if no one says otherwise! ), but I'm convinced that "呛着" can be read as "qiāng zhe", in a similar fashion to 你看着！ (Take a look!), 听着！(Listen!)

 

And this is an example I found in Wenlin, where "抢着" is glossed as "qiāng zhe":

慢点儿吃， 别抢着！

haha, i am a native speaker. 

actually both Tiana and 香笼笼 are right. In the most  majority of the cases, we pronounce 呛着 as "qiang zhe", just as the tiana said. for example, 慢点吃，别呛着。But sometimes when someone has already chocked and turn to others to help, he will say "帮帮我，我呛着了"。 in this occassion only, we pronounce "呛着" as "qiang zhao".

Thanks Zxin, what you said in post #6 is what I was thinking of. The 了 that follows 着 alters its meaning and pronunciation.
