却的用法

I had this 填空练习 the other day.

 

1. ________ 我们公司收到了参加展览会的邀请，_________ 我们拒绝了。

 

A 尽管。。。。。却。。。。。 B 虽然。。。。。但是

 

I chose A. But A is wrong. However, if we change things thus:

 

1. ________ 我们公司收到了参加展览会的邀请，我们 _______ 拒绝了。then A would be ok.

 

Is it so that, in Chinese, we can never have '却【代词/名词】‘ only ’【代词/名词】却‘？？？

A is correct.虽然我们公司收到了展览会的邀请，但是我们拒绝了 means although our company received the invitation to the exibition, we regected. 尽管我们公司收到了邀请，却我们拒绝了 is just likealthough our company received the invitation to the exibition, however we regected. it is not conherent in chinese. but you can conherent it by adding 被. 却被我们拒绝了 means the invetation was rejected by us. that works.

and 却 not only means but, it also means cool down（冷却） or afraid （退却）....etc

As I understand from my own learning and the two above posts, it is not only a question of word order.  却 does not have quite the same meaning as 但 .  It has more of a feeling of contrasting alternatives than just a simple "but."  Sometimes "in spite of that fact" works as a translation, but sometimes not.

 

I think when you use 却, you express the notion that what follows is incongruous or very surprising given what came before.  It is a stronger and more direct contrast than 但 expresses.

 

*尽管我们公司收到了邀请，我们却拒绝了

*Although we received an invitation, in spite of that fact, we declined.

 

I think these are a little bit strange, since isn't it expected that you will either accept or decline an invitation?  Declining an initation is not in direct contrast with receiving one.

Obviously, "we" have already rejected the invitation.

I think what you point out as strange is actually just what the sentences imply. The implication is that the speaker's natural assumption would have been that the company would accept the invitation... (but) they 却 rejected it.
