TSkillet Posted May 19, 2005 at 04:52 PM Report Posted May 19, 2005 at 04:52 PM sorry, maybe I'm a jerk for enjoying this. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1399668.html?menu= Quote
Glenn Posted May 20, 2005 at 03:07 AM Report Posted May 20, 2005 at 03:07 AM I feel bad for the guy in the picture. Aside from the physical pain he must have been quite embarrassed. I suppose the photographer does have a point, but the pictures seem exploitative. Couldn't he have just shown them to the government without posting them in the newspaper? Quote
markalexander100 Posted May 20, 2005 at 04:08 AM Report Posted May 20, 2005 at 04:08 AM Couldn't he have just shown them to the government without posting them in the newspaper? Nothing would happen. Not without forms signed in triplicate, the right ganbu being in his office and sober... Quote
wushijiao Posted May 20, 2005 at 04:23 AM Report Posted May 20, 2005 at 04:23 AM People steal the metal rain, water and sewer covers to sell for scrap metal. 路上小心啊! Quote
wix Posted May 20, 2005 at 04:26 AM Report Posted May 20, 2005 at 04:26 AM Initially when I saw this thread I thought it might have related to media censorship in China. But once I saw the photos I saw that the situation in this example is a universal one. It's a long-raging ethical debate about whether journalists should simply observe or whether they should take action in cases where the problem is very clear. Quote
Quest Posted May 20, 2005 at 07:52 AM Report Posted May 20, 2005 at 07:52 AM That happened quite often when I was young in Guangzhou, people removed the covers to ease the floodings caused by rain, but they would usually put a chair in place... Quote
roddy Posted May 20, 2005 at 09:25 AM Report Posted May 20, 2005 at 09:25 AM People in Guangzhou must be much more civic-minded, here in Beijing they either get stolen, or workmen just don't bother putting them back on . . . Roddy Quote

Lu Posted May 21, 2005 at 08:31 AM Report Posted May 21, 2005 at 08:31 AM Looks quite painful :-/ If I were that man I would be very angry at the photographer for not warning me. But at the same time, a picture like this is more likely to get the government to do something about it. You can tell the ganbu someone is going to break his/her neck over that hole, but it's more convincing if you show pictures like this. I just hope something is going to be done about the hole, then the man didn't fall for nothing. Quote

It's a shame that there needs to be a sacrificial lamb for something like this to be taken care of. However, I do understand that a picture is worth... well, you know. Quote
