闹顶?说顶?

In the chapter I'm currently translating, 顶 is used in a way I don't understand (and neither does my language partner). I hope someone here has an idea.

The context: A woman has gone to Beijing to petition every year, and the local officials have tried - and failed - to stop her every time. This year, she announces she won't go. The officials don't believe her, talk to her, push her a bit too far and... she changes her mind: she'll go this year after all. The district head reports this to the mayor and is, of course, criticized. Sorry, says the district head. I'll try again right away!

The mayor thinks that's not a good idea: 你都与人家闹顶了，光是磨转这个‘顶’，就非一日之功。

He decides to invite the woman for dinner and go talk to her herself. So someone has to go invite her.

[县长]和[法院院长]，都刚刚与[女人]说顶了，不敢再招惹她，[县长]便把这副担子，压到了[镇长]身上。

During the dinner, the mayor asks: 你上回说过不告状的话，他们都不信，就把话说顶了。

(In the end, he fails to convince her.)

What does 顶 mean in these sentences? The English translator apparently couldn't figure it out and just left out the entire sentence. Dutch has the expression 'op de spits drijven', 'to force up the spike' literally, meaning something like 'to escalate [a fight], to bring sth to a head'. Does 顶 mean anything like that here?

I can only guess cuz clearly it's local dialect.

 

“你都与人家闹顶了” I think it means 闹僵了, and “说顶了” means “说死了” or “说绝了”. 顶 could mean the top/extreme as to say things to the extreme, or it could mean the same as in 顶撞 (literally).

I never came back to thank you. Thank you! In the end, I translated it as 'uitgepraat zijn met', meaning 'done talking' with a connotation of 'we've run out of things to say to her and now she and we are rather mad at each other'. I'm not 100% happy with my translation, so perhaps I'll manage to improve it at some point.
