Popular Post Matthias Posted December 11, 2014 at 01:08 PM Popular Post Report Posted December 11, 2014 at 01:08 PM I created an Anki deck consisting of the dialogue of 小城之春. Chinese-forums' user atitarev provided the subtitle file in the following thread, in which you can also find a link to the full movie: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/12580-%E3%80%8A%E5%B0%8F%E5%9F%8E%E4%B9%8B%E6%98%A5%E3%80%8Bspring-in-a-small-town/ You can find the Anki deck on Ankiweb: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/9997725 Each card consists of one sentence and the corresponding part of the video, as well as the pinyin and vocabulary. There's no English translation so far. This is how I learned speaking Chinese and recognizing common characters: I'd look at the sentence in Chinese and watch the video once or even multiple times, then try to rephrase the sentence, mostly only in my mind. I'd turn the card to see if I got the pronunciation right or not, and look at any words that I didn't know so far. Once I got to an advanced stage, I shifted the video to the back side of the cards. I've done that with six movies or so, unfortunately they're all still copyrighted ;-) . I really like this approach because there are inherent milestones: Once you finish a movie, you can watch it and understand (almost) everything, which is awesome. Each card also contains a link to the sentence on my website mandarinbanana.com, where you can post a comment if you're unclear about a sentence, or if you want to report an error. There are still errors here and there unfortunately! I'm really looking forward to 大闹天宫 entering the public domain in about one year. If you're downloading the deck and doing something else with it, like processing it to generate a different deck, please post here. I'm curious what people will use it for. 5 Quote
ztanga Posted April 27, 2018 at 06:44 PM Report Posted April 27, 2018 at 06:44 PM Unfortunately the link is down. I would appreciate it if you reupload the deck. Quote
Matthias Posted April 28, 2018 at 05:29 PM Author Report Posted April 28, 2018 at 05:29 PM Yes, it was deleted when Damien Elmes (who runs Anki) found that almost all shared decks about 250 MB were created from copyrighted movies using subs2srs, and therefore announced to delete all shared decks above this size. I believe it is still forbidden to share decks larger than 250 MB. It seems I also don't have a backup, but if you really want to have the deck, I could recreate it from data from my homepage. Quote
ztanga Posted April 29, 2018 at 10:58 AM Report Posted April 29, 2018 at 10:58 AM Thank you, @Matthias That would be nice of you. If you create decks for three movies available in your site http://www.mandarinbanana.com/movies. if We do not ask too much and you have time for that. Quote
Matthias Posted May 4, 2018 at 03:22 PM Author Report Posted May 4, 2018 at 03:22 PM Hi @ztanga, I'm on two weeks of vacation now, and I plan to recreate the decks during this time. I'll post here once I've finished and uploaded them :-) 2 Quote

Flickserve Posted May 30, 2018 at 03:24 AM Report Posted May 30, 2018 at 03:24 AM @Matthias Did you find adding video clips to cards very helpful? I haven't tried that due to the deck becoming very large. Quote
Matthias Posted May 31, 2018 at 06:51 PM Author Report Posted May 31, 2018 at 06:51 PM Hey @ztanga, thanks for your patience. Indeed I didn't find time during my vacation, and in a week from now I'll be going to China for four weeks on a job assignment. I'm afraid you'll have to wait some more. I definitely want to do it, but it will take some time for me to find all the scripts and put everything together. I want to recreate these decks because to answer your question, @Flickserve, I found it indeed very helpful. I used the subtitles in the following way: at first when I couldn't read I had the Chinese characters displayed and the video clip play. Then I would quiz myself to repeat the correct pinyin. Later, I would only show the characters on the front side without playing the video clip, but quiz me to correctly pronounce the sentence. In retrospect it seems strange to me that I acquired a lot of vocabulary that way, but it was very effective. Also, it was extremely helpful for my listening ability and pronunciation. I did this for the following movies (if I remember every one, approximately in that order): - Havoc in heaven - Farewell my concubine - Yellow earth - Lust, caution - Raise the red lantern - Crouching tiger, hidden dragon - and some more I forgot It was one of the most satisfying moments in my learning to finish a movie, watch it, and understand every sentence. Additionally, the content in the Anki cards was very engaging. Reviewing felt like playing a game rather than a chore. But yes, my deck was very large at that time. Nowadays, as I am learning the HSK6 vocabulary, the movies are not enough to have an example sentence for every word to learn, so I just learn the words individually. I think I should go back to the sentence level, but I didn't find a good way yet. 1 Quote

Thanks for that. Did you have the translation on the card as well? If the film had no translation, did you work out your own translation and then add it to the note? I find it interesting because I have also used subs2srs a lot. Quote
