ralphmat Posted December 11, 2014 at 10:34 PM Report Share Posted December 11, 2014 at 10:34 PM Hello, bit of a random question. On my phone I use pinyin to type out Chinese characters. However the character 女 which is nü never comes up on my phone when I type in nu. Is there something I should be typing differently? Thanks

m000gle Posted December 11, 2014 at 11:27 PM Report Share Posted December 11, 2014 at 11:27 PM For anyone reading this, in future: Hanyu Pinyin IME's uses "v" as a universal alias for "ü", when typing the phonetic input before character selection, given how the latter is non-trivial to type on most keyboards. So, when using an IME and attempting to express the "ü" final you will need to type the "v" character. Some fuzzy pinyin input and/or auto-correct algorithms may ignore this rule, from time to time; but don't rely on them. That said, the Hanyu Pinyin is still correctly written with the U-umlaut "ü". So, when typing or writing by hand the pinyin itself (and not a Chinese character), "ü" will be used. This can, imho, look a bit ridiculous when combined with tone marks "nǚ"
