habdil Posted December 13, 2014 at 12:33 AM Report Share Posted December 13, 2014 at 12:33 AM I live in the UK and I'm studying Chinese professionally with a one-to-one teacher once a week as I'm working full time and that's all I can afford financially and time wise. I find that YellowBridge.com is invaluable source for learning the stroke order of a character, however one time it was under maintenance I could not get access! I don't want this to happen again so I'd like to know if there's another free website that provides the stroke order the characters please? The stroke order feature on YellowBridge, if you've not used it, visually represents the strokes like a movie would i.e. in real time, rather than a diagram. oceancalligraphy Posted December 15, 2014 at 05:07 AM Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 05:07 AM For traditional characters, there is https://www.moedict.tw The search box is on the left. After selecting a character, there is a pencil icon on the right that will then display a stroke order animation.
xiaokaka Posted December 15, 2014 at 06:23 AM Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 06:23 AM This website has stroke order for both simplified and traditional characters and you can also download it as a free program to use offline: http://www.eon.com.hk/estroke/
habdil Posted December 15, 2014 at 01:41 PM Author Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 01:41 PM Thanks "yet"but if my Mandarin were that good I don't think that I would be where I am right now - there's no English option on the site! Thanks xiaokaka but that 300MB download placed adverts on my Desktop, almost like a time machine I felt it was 1988 all over again! It's also a local solution, I am hunting for a web based one of which will span all of my devices.
li3wei1 Posted December 15, 2014 at 02:29 PM Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 02:29 PM www.archchinese.com has stroke order animations and is online.
roddy Posted December 15, 2014 at 02:49 PM Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 02:49 PM It's also worth remembering that a good understanding of stroke order rules and character components isn't too hard to attain, and will leave you able to get the stroke order right intuitively much more often than not. habdil Posted December 15, 2014 at 04:09 PM Author Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 04:09 PM Thanks li3wei1, that's a good back-up site, but unfortunately it uses Flash, so it won't work on my iPad, which I like to use when studying Chinese. I hoped to move away from Flash, everyone does, but it just keeps piping up, it looks so 1995. Just so you know the YellowBridge site uses a Java applet. roddy: I am getting there but even when I think I know, that is very different from actually knowing so I don't mind taking the time to get it right. I have looked into how the stroke system works already thanks, it was one of the first thing that I was advised to do. Does anybody else know of any other sites, perhaps not Flash dependent? Shelley Posted December 15, 2014 at 09:58 PM Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 at 09:58 PM There are a few apps for android that do that sort of thing not sure if they have an iOS version. One that springs to mind is e-stroke. Of course if you are using an iPad then I would strongly recommend Pleco, there is a stroke animation addon for a nominal fee. Pleco in general is in my opinion indispensable for anyone learning Chinese.
imron Posted December 16, 2014 at 01:05 AM Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 at 01:05 AM Yeah, I'll second pleco. It runs great on iOS and has a very thorough set of stroke order animations.
anonymoose Posted December 16, 2014 at 03:35 AM Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 at 03:35 AM zhongwen.com Rather old-fashioned, but it was my mainstay in the old days before there were many other resources on the internet.

habdil Posted December 17, 2014 at 07:36 PM Author Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 07:36 PM One thing I noticed is that when I downloaded one of the expansion packs i.e. the stroke order plug-in on my iPhone that it wasn't available on my iPad as an option so it doesn't look like I can transfer purchases, but will confirm this. mikelove Posted December 17, 2014 at 07:37 PM Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 07:37 PM You can certainly transfer purchases - go into the Pleco "Add-ons" screen on your iPad and tap "Restore iTunes Purchases." If that doesn't work, your iTunes account logins might be out-of-sync - email support with your Registration IDs and we'll be happy to help you further.
