Takeshi Posted December 15, 2014 at 05:02 PM Report Posted December 15, 2014 at 05:02 PM I remember somewhere here there was this 我国 discussion. Something about people debating whether it meant "China" or "our country" or "my country" or whether it was appropriate for non-Chinese people to use to refer to whatever. I just stumbled upon this attached picture. Pictured is Singapore, discussing stopping the broadcast of 方言 in the banner they use the term 我国 to refer to Singapore. Not sure if this is common usage now, but it looks like 我国 can be used to mean places that are not China? Or I guess Singapore is special somehow? Quote
simc Posted December 15, 2014 at 10:39 PM Report Posted December 15, 2014 at 10:39 PM Well for Singaporeans "our country" is Singapore. You could use 我国 to refer to your own country if you wanted. Same with 回国 or 国内. 1 Quote
fanglu Posted December 15, 2014 at 10:45 PM Report Posted December 15, 2014 at 10:45 PM I was reading an Indonesian Chinese-language newspaper about a week ago and Indonesia was constantly referred to as 我国. So, I think it's fair to say that, while it may not be used consistently in every Chinese community outside China, 我国 can definitely be used to refer to any country. (The paper also used the slightly weird expression 我经济, which I hadn't seen before.) Quote

ZhangJiang Posted December 16, 2014 at 05:15 AM Report Posted December 16, 2014 at 05:15 AM 我国 is one word meaning "our country". It's not a phrase and doesn't equal to 我的国家. It only appears in formal situations where Chinese is used with a need to say "our country", which doesn't happen very often other than in PRC, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. Quote
