New Members johnjtraynor Posted December 16, 2014 at 03:16 PM New Members Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 at 03:16 PM Someone told me this hanzi character is pronounced Way or "Hwe" and means "let's go!" or vigor. Can someone help me with this? Thanks!
Shelley Posted December 16, 2014 at 06:39 PM Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 at 06:39 PM I don't believe this is a Hanzi. I am not sure what it is. I not sure it is a character in any language. I think it has been made up. However I could be wrong and it could be so far from what it is supposed to be that I don't recognise it. New Members johnjtraynor Posted December 16, 2014 at 06:42 PM Author New Members Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 at 06:42 PM It is a hat from the Hong Kong Excelsior hotel. I took it one day it was raining. I don't want to wear a hat that says "Beware of Stupid Tourist"
Shelley Posted December 17, 2014 at 10:21 AM Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 10:21 AM Maye it is the hotel logo. It just doesn't look like Chinese character to me. i am no expert though so I could be wrong.
skylee Posted December 17, 2014 at 12:55 PM Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 12:55 PM It is 會. It is indeed Excelsior's logo /theme. http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdrst=1&wdqb=%E6%9C%83 “to assemble / to meet / to gather“ PS - most people who know Chinese can recognise the word. Don't worry.
Shelley Posted December 17, 2014 at 01:22 PM Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 01:22 PM Did you mean can't recognise the word. Don't worry. or did you mean to the people to whom it matters can read it so there is no need to worry.
New Members johnjtraynor Posted December 17, 2014 at 01:41 PM Author New Members Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 01:41 PM Wow, very stylized caligraphy. I would not have gotten from this to hui.
OneEye Posted December 17, 2014 at 03:36 PM Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 03:36 PM It's not all that stylized, just a bit cursive. Most non-native speakers don't really have much exposure to character forms other than those used in print (楷體、宋體、黑體), hence the difficulty in recognizing it. Shelley Posted December 17, 2014 at 05:03 PM Report Share Posted December 17, 2014 at 05:03 PM Ah it all becomes clear now, thanks to skylee and OneEye.
Demonic_Duck Posted December 18, 2014 at 06:04 AM Report Share Posted December 18, 2014 at 06:04 AM @Shelley: it's just the 繁体 version of “会” (aside from the stylised font). Not sure what nuances it has in Cantonese, but in Mandarin it can mean “to be able to” for certain skills (as well as the meaning of gathering, which I think is the more fundamental/original meaning). I'm not aware of any circumstances where it can mean “let's go” or “vigour”, though.
