I know "shafa" is a loan word for 'sofa', but I see it sometimes in forums as if it had a slang meanin, like 'cool!' or something like that. I have no idea what...I just know it's used other than for 'sofa.'

Does "shafa" 沙发 have slang meanings?

Thanks.

The first person to post to a thread will sometimes add 沙发 to the post as a way of registering that they were the very first posters. Think of it as calling 'shotgun' as you're entering a car.

Possible sources: 1) sofa as the best seat in the house, 2) So Fa = sf = so fast

variant: 板凳 (hard bench for the latecomers)

So in subsequent posts the original poster would add 沙发 to their post to remind people that they started the topic?

There's another, slightly naughty, usage for 沙发。

This one works best at the disco or KTV. When chatting up a lady friend, a guy might invite her to sit on his 真皮沙发。That is, his "real skin sofa" ie. his lap. 8)
