lengjai69 Posted May 21, 2005 at 06:26 PM Report Posted May 21, 2005 at 06:26 PM I know "shafa" is a loan word for 'sofa', but I see it sometimes in forums as if it had a slang meanin, like 'cool!' or something like that. I have no idea what...I just know it's used other than for 'sofa.' Does "shafa" 沙发 have slang meanings? Thanks. Quote
jj Posted May 22, 2005 at 02:18 AM Report Posted May 22, 2005 at 02:18 AM The first person to post to a thread will sometimes add 沙发 to the post as a way of registering that they were the very first posters. Think of it as calling 'shotgun' as you're entering a car. Possible sources: 1) sofa as the best seat in the house, 2) So Fa = sf = so fast variant: 板凳 (hard bench for the latecomers) see: http://bbs.news.163.com/bbs/--sc3-Ry4whD-5Reg.html and: http://bbs.hx2004.com/hxbbs/dispbbs.asp?BoardID=9&ID=290866&page=1 Quote
roddy Posted May 22, 2005 at 02:26 AM Report Posted May 22, 2005 at 02:26 AM So in subsequent posts the original poster would add 沙发 to their post to remind people that they started the topic? Roddy Quote

Tsunku Posted May 23, 2005 at 05:15 AM Report Posted May 23, 2005 at 05:15 AM There's another, slightly naughty, usage for 沙发。 This one works best at the disco or KTV. When chatting up a lady friend, a guy might invite her to sit on his 真皮沙发。That is, his "real skin sofa" ie. his lap. Quote
