Remy11 Posted December 25, 2014 at 11:24 AM Report Posted December 25, 2014 at 11:24 AM Hi guys. Please translate the following statements to Mandarin for me, please: "I don t remember the last time I ve tasted Ramen this good. It certainly was one of the many highlights of my Christmas. This restaurant serves some of the best Japanese food in town!"Please and thank you. I'm Cantonese and I want to express how much I enjoy eating Japanese food to my Mandarin-speaking friends. Quote
skylee Posted December 25, 2014 at 01:55 PM Report Posted December 25, 2014 at 01:55 PM You are Cantonese. So do you read Chinese? The translation will be in Chinese characters (because Mandarin is written in Chinese characters, same as Cantonese). 1 Quote

Kobo-Daishi Posted December 26, 2014 at 12:45 AM Report Posted December 26, 2014 at 12:45 AM I'm Cantonese and I want to express how much I enjoy eating Japanese food to my Mandarin-speaking friends. They're your friends, so, how do you usually communicate with each other? And why do you feel the need to abandon Cantonese in favor of Mandarin all of a sudden. Kobo. Quote
skylee Posted December 26, 2014 at 01:24 AM Report Posted December 26, 2014 at 01:24 AM If you are Cantonese and can easily read and understand Chinese characters, then why do need help? You can just write what you want to say in standard Chinese and say it in Mandarin. My attempt - 我吃過的拉麵之中這個最好。這是過聖誕其中一件最讓我高興的事。這城裏最好的日本料理,這是其中一家。 Quote

Demonic_Duck Posted December 26, 2014 at 08:16 AM Report Posted December 26, 2014 at 08:16 AM Not sure why everyone's jumping on you for being Cantonese. As you obviously have something of a background in Chinese languages though, I'd suggest in future you post your own efforts and ask for corrections/improvements, maybe people will be more willing to help that way. At any rate, my attempt: “我真的想不起来上一次吃过这么好吃的日式拉面。吃这个算得上我这次过圣诞节的一个亮点。这家饭馆做的日本菜是这座城市最佳之一!” 1 Quote
lingo-ling Posted December 29, 2014 at 05:15 AM Report Posted December 29, 2014 at 05:15 AM Remember, Cantonese and Mandarin are quite different on the colloquial level. For example, 少少 vs. 一點 for "a little". Quote
