Popular Post grawrt Posted January 7, 2015 at 03:51 PM Popular Post Report Share Posted January 7, 2015 at 03:51 PM I came across this a while back and have been hooked. I only read four chapters but the writing style is very lax-and un-stuffy. The main characters whole life has been riddled with bad luck like getting held back in kindergarten twice, getting electrocuted by taking a leak, and breaking his jaw~ causing the unfortunate problem of his jaw dislocating every now and then (if he chews too fast or opens his mouth too wide)it's kind of like one of those ghost-fighting stories ( I think, like I said I haven't really gotten far enough). In my head it would be the perfect comic book or perhaps cartoon but that's just my inner-geek speaking. The audio is also very entertaining with a heavy 东北 accent, but it's not too hard to get the gist of it. Honestly even if the story was crap I would still listen along because I'm in love with the guys voice. Audio: http://www.ting89.com/books/9363.html Text:http://www.motie.com/book/24336/chapter Let me know what you guys think edit: If anyone's interested I can post some of my notes for chapter 1-4. It's not much, mostly vocab list.
roddy Posted January 7, 2015 at 04:06 PM Report Share Posted January 7, 2015 at 04:06 PM That sounded fun - audio follows the text quite closely (in the few minutes I listened to) and there's plenty of very authentic usage in there. Not perhaps all for use in polite society though. The first 1:45 of the first audio bit is an intro, then the actual story starts. How are you using the, grawrt? Reading along as you listen, listening then checking stuff against the text, or....?
Law-West Posted January 7, 2015 at 08:28 PM Report Share Posted January 7, 2015 at 08:28 PM I started reading the first one and with a dictionary to help me out it seems like the right level for reading practice, but there is one sentence I'm not quite sure about: 我用130块钱从农药店老板手中换来了农药,结果喝出了一块脚趾甲 He ended up drinking a toenail? How would that even get into a bottle of pesticide? I must be misunderstanding this bit. Oh, and also, what's 点背? It appears more than once, but it doesn't appear in any dictionary I use.
pancake Posted January 8, 2015 at 04:35 AM Report Share Posted January 8, 2015 at 04:35 AM Thanks for the tip grawrt. Listening to this was a welcome break from my normal high-falutin' pursuits and reminded me of my time in good old 东北.
pancake Posted January 8, 2015 at 05:04 AM Report Share Posted January 8, 2015 at 05:04 AM Law-West: The main character wants to commit suicide, but ends up choking on a toenail instead. The joke is that this guy cannot even commit suicide successfully. Also 点背 is 东北方言 and has the same meaning as 倒霉.
Law-West Posted January 8, 2015 at 07:36 AM Report Share Posted January 8, 2015 at 07:36 AM @Pancake: That's what I assumed, I just didn't get how he managed to swallow a toenail. I guess this guy's bad luck really is supernatural As for 点背, now those sentences make a lot more sense, thanks!
grawrt Posted January 9, 2015 at 04:09 AM Author Report Share Posted January 9, 2015 at 04:09 AM Sorry for the late reply! Tests *argh* & sorry I forgot to mention to ignore the first minute and a half. This is how I usually go through the chapters: I usually listen through it without reading or stopping just to get a feel for it since it's nice and engaging. Then I take a look at the text and do a quick read through and write down vocabulary I don't know, I usually do this in segments because I get lazy. Then I re listen to the audio while looking at the vocab I wrote down to see if that part of the story is more clear to me. If there are any parts that are still unclear I go back and listen along with the text. Then continue on. Once I get through the whole audio (or perhaps half, depending on how tired I am), I usually let the audio play in the background as I read the story in depth. I'm not sure why I do this honestly or if this is a good system.
Junso1 Posted March 17, 2015 at 08:16 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2015 at 08:16 AM I'm pretty sure I can master his accent in about 5 hours, 30 minutes if I have Baijiu.

Lianbu Zhou Posted March 22, 2015 at 11:22 AM Report Share Posted March 22, 2015 at 11:22 AM Well, as a Chinese, I could answer those questions: 我用130块钱从农药店老板手中换来了农药,结果喝出了一块脚趾甲 Drinking a bottle of pesticide but find a toenail in the bottle. You could imagine that how weird the situation is. This knid of situation could be expressed as 点背——everything you try to do has a bad end or in other word, you are too unlucky. Drinking a bottole of pesticide is a very classic way to commit a suicide in Chinese rural area. When a man tried to kill himself by drinking a bottle of pesticide and then he found a toenail in that bottle, he would feel disgusting and realised that he was unlucky enough to suffer such weird situation.
