EmmaW Posted January 13, 2015 at 08:19 AM Report Share Posted January 13, 2015 at 08:19 AM I have a pair of Chinese blue and white vases and would love to know more about the story represented on them... As you can see below there appears to be some kind of chase or confrontation between the figures on horseback. I've looked everywhere to find a myth that might apply but haven't had any luck so thought if someone could very kindly translate the character on the standard that might be a way into the story. Who is represented? And why does one of the people seem to be carrying a child? Any help will be hugely appreciated. Thank you Emma
dwq Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:03 AM Report Share Posted January 13, 2015 at 09:03 AM The character is 趙 and the person carrying a child is possibly Zhao Yun (趙雲), one of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. There is a famous episode of him rescuing his lord's young son during the Battle of Changban in the book Romance of the Three Kingdoms. "Liu Bei abandoned his family and fled. Zhao Yun carried Liu Bei's young son Liu Shan and protected Liu Bei's wife Lady Gan (Liu Shan's mother) during the battle and eventually delivered them to safety." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhao_Yun#Battle_of_Changban 三國演義 第四十一回:劉玄德攜民渡江,趙子龍單騎救主 http://cls.hs.yzu.edu.tw/san/bin/body.asp?CHNO=
