Popular Post StChris Posted January 15, 2015 at 10:20 AM Popular Post Report Posted January 15, 2015 at 10:20 AM This is the first in a planned series of "lessons" based on the TV news prgramme 关键洞察力.I've already been studying Chinese for a while now and the TV dramas just aren't providing the challange they used to. In fact, I think I had begun to get a little complacent, thinking my Chinese was better than it was. Coming across this programme and only being able to understand around 25% of what was being said was one of those classic humbling experiences which we students of Chinese have the pleasure of experiencing on a frequent basis. For me there are two reasons why these type of news programmes are much more difficult than regular TV dramas. The first is that they contain a lot of specialised and more formal vocab which you just don't tend to come across in your day to day life. The second reason is the sheer volume of language you're exposed to. Although similar in length to a regular TV drama episode, in the average TV drama around half the time there's no actual speaking going on, just long shots of the main charcters crying, driving the car, looking thoughtfully into the distance etc. In 关键洞察力 you get 43 minutes of non-stop high paced talking. I actually had a nostalgic sensation watching my first episode of 关键洞察力 - a headache. I remember I used to get a headache whenever I watched more than 5 minutes of the a TV drama. Those beijing accents in 奋斗 almost killed me. Now the Chinese TV shows are something I watch to relax after a hard day's reading. I studied some news classes at my Chinese school before, but unfortunately the textbooks were full of articles on apolitical and uncontroversial subjects such as biodiversity, the survival of ancient Chinese art forms, parenting etc. To my mind "news" should include a big chunk of politics and economics, and I hope that I can plug those gaps in by Chinese by watching this show. To give a quick introduction to the show, 关键洞察力 has a show every week dealing with various, mostly international, topics (for example the Ukraine crisis, US mid-term elections, Indian-Chinese rivalry). They put together these fun short videos giving background info on the topic (complete with dramatic music and funny graphics) followed by debates in the studio (which looks like the deck of the starship enterprise). Although, being mainland China and all, the debates a somewhat limited in scope (you won't get a guest suggesting that the diaoyu islands belong to Japan for example), the lively format makes it much less dry than your everage Chinese news programme. As well as a vocab list, I've created a series of questions to test your understanding to go with each section of the programme. I will put a disclaimer here that I'm still learning Chinese, so please forgive any mistakes (if any mods spot any big mistakes, please feel free to edit, don't worry about me losing face haha). I know that studying each TV drama episode in detail like this eventually paid off in terms of comprehension and I'm hoping for a similar effect here. Hopefully other people might find it useful too. I'll commit to doing ten episodes like this at first and review from there. Any suggestions, tips, criticism, encouragement and/or hate are all welcome! 7 Quote
