dementior Posted January 16, 2015 at 03:35 AM Report Posted January 16, 2015 at 03:35 AM Hi everyone! My company is sending me to Taipei for half a year, and although I will be working pretty hard there I still want to continue studying the language. Since I will work till the afternoon my guess is that my only options are evening class at a private school or tutors (4 or 6 hours a week). I am trying to avoid attending classes on the weekends since Taiwan has too many places to travel to and I plan to explore. My current level is intermediate (HSK 5) and have had very little exposure to traditional Chinese. As for the schools I have found so far: 1. TLI Taiwan Language Institute (already contacted them) www.tli.com.tw http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/41215-tli-in-taipei-pros-and-cons-please/ They offer evening group class (year is divided into 4 terms) and one-to-one. Price around 500 NTD one to one hour. And it is possible to learn simplified. Spring Course will start from March 2nd to May 31st. For Summer Course, it is June 1st to August 30th. For group courses, the tuition and the schedule of the course is fixed, and is dictated by the course itself. As for individual courses, the rate for the tuition is determined by the total hours of courses taken per week. 2. MLC Manadarin Learning center (contacted them already) http://mlc.sce.pccu.edu.tw No intermediate evening group class so only option left would be one to one starting 500 NTD per hour. 3. TMI Taiwan mandarin institute http://www.tmichinese.com/courses/ http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/45058-taiwan-mandarin-institute/?hl=%2Btaipei+%2Bmandarin So my question is has anyone tried any of these schools recently? Are there any other schools I should consider in Taipei? As for private tutoring out of a school there is this thread explaining the experience learning with independent tutors but it did not specify the websites or resources used to get in contact with those tutors. http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/43939-independent-chinese-study-review/?hl=%2Btaipei+%2Bmandarin Is there any good website to find them? http://italki.com ? thanks a lot! best regards 2 Quote
Lao Che Posted January 20, 2015 at 01:02 AM Report Posted January 20, 2015 at 01:02 AM I was looking into tutors the other day (I might take a vacation to Taiwan this summer). Here is what I found after googling "Taiwan tutors": http://www.tealit.com/ad_categories.php?language=en§ion_id=83&subsection_id=97&content_mode=2 There's 1000 tutors on this site alone. e: You could try asking MariaMaria how she found her tutors as well. http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/47128-how-independent-study-has-worked-well-for-me/#comment-360124 Quote
dementior Posted January 22, 2015 at 10:59 AM Author Report Posted January 22, 2015 at 10:59 AM Thanks for the answer! it seems that website you mentioned is the website... I tried several others and the references are a lot less. I was surprised to see that the prices are similar or even more expensive than private schools? I thought not having to pay for the school overhead the prices would be a bit more competitive... But most of them ask for at least 400 per hour, even though depending on volume I guess everything can be negotiated. Let me ask Maria then. regards Quote
