metal.lunchbox Posted January 27, 2015 at 06:24 AM Report Posted January 27, 2015 at 06:24 AM I'm an ESL teacher working in China. I'm from the U.S. and I grew up watching educational programs for children on TV, like Mister Roger's Neighborhood, Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, and a myriad of others. I decided to show a part of Sesame Street to my kindergarten students and they loved it, of course. The Chinese teacher's had an unexpected reaction. They seemed slightly amazed, like they had never seen anything like it. Is there any Educational children's TV programming in China, roughly analogous to the examples above? If not, why? I know that China isn't the U.S.. They don't have Mister Rogers for the same simple reason they don't have Doritos, this is China, not the U.S, culture's are different. But I am curious if there is some important reason why such shows don't exist here, if indeed that is the case. After all, the U.S. isn't the only country with such programs. Quote
Walkingtree Posted January 27, 2015 at 09:55 AM Report Posted January 27, 2015 at 09:55 AM There are! I can't recall the name of one I just saw recently, but it involved people dressed up in animal suits singing songs about sharing and nature. Even things like 喜洋洋 ostensibly teach vocabulary. Quote
Shelley Posted January 27, 2015 at 03:52 PM Report Posted January 27, 2015 at 03:52 PM There are quite a lot of kids shows on CCTV (Chinese central TV) You can access their website and it has quite a lot of language learning shows for all ages. Quote
maomao2014 Posted January 27, 2015 at 07:19 PM Report Posted January 27, 2015 at 07:19 PM When I was young, I always watched 大风车 at CCTV. Nowadays the kids TV shows are much worse. A lot of them are either too boring or violent Quote
metal.lunchbox Posted January 31, 2015 at 10:18 AM Author Report Posted January 31, 2015 at 10:18 AM Cool. Thanks for the responses. I brought this question here after asking more than a dozen people who grew up in China. All of whom said that such programming doesn't exist. I tend not to easily believe what other people tell me anymore, so I came here looking for confirmation. I'll Check out CCTVs website. Quote
