Demonic_Duck Posted February 7, 2015 at 01:05 PM Report Posted February 7, 2015 at 01:05 PM What are the best options for this? I use Firefox, but would also be interested if there's something really great for Chrome etc. For a long time I've used Perapera, but unfortunately it only has C-E, C-F (French) and C-D (German) options, and no option to add custom dictionaries. I also downloaded zdict.net's popup dictionary, which is C-C but also with English translations, but it's not ideal for a number of reasons: it's slow to load (dictionary entries downloaded individually, rather than installed all at once); if you select a group of characters that doesn't form a word, it simply returns the useless message “查无此词语”, rather than segmenting the selection into searchable chunks; there's no option to edit the search selection from within the popup dialogue; and there's no option to automatically search on hover. In fact, overall it's rather basic and lacking in customisation options. Is there anything available that's better than this? Alternatively, any option that allows you to install custom dictionary files? Quote
Shelley Posted February 7, 2015 at 01:57 PM Report Posted February 7, 2015 at 01:57 PM When I used Chrome I used Zhongwen pop up dictionary. It is C-E but I never explored any other configurations it might have had. It might be of help. Quote
Demonic_Duck Posted February 8, 2015 at 10:11 PM Author Report Posted February 8, 2015 at 10:11 PM Zhongwen Popup is even more limited in that respect, it only has one dictionary. Seems like what I'm looking for likely doesn't exist. Quote
Shelley Posted February 8, 2015 at 11:05 PM Report Posted February 8, 2015 at 11:05 PM Oh, I never did use it much, cos i gave up with chrome pretty darn quick, which I found to be pretty darn slow Quote
ZhuFei Posted May 24, 2015 at 08:52 AM Report Posted May 24, 2015 at 08:52 AM (edited) I'm using Perapera Chinese at the moment. It's OK.. Misread the thread - see below. Edited May 25, 2015 at 10:35 AM by ZhuFei Quote
Demonic_Duck Posted May 24, 2015 at 09:36 AM Author Report Posted May 24, 2015 at 09:36 AM Are you saying it now has C-C functionality, or did you misread the thread? Quote
ZhuFei Posted May 24, 2015 at 10:12 AM Report Posted May 24, 2015 at 10:12 AM What about this - Lingoes http://www.lingoes.net/en/index.html It's free and offers browser integration with text-capture/popup + download & install many optional dictionaries. Including Chinese-Chinese. Browse dictionaries here http://www.lingoes.net/en/dictionary/dict_search.php -------------------------------Installation------------------------------------------ -Install Lingoes + whatever dictionaries. -In Lingoes: Configuration -> text capture -> install text capture plugin. -Text capture can be set to mouse hover for a Perapera kind of feel. ZhuFei Posted May 24, 2015 at 10:16 AM Report Posted May 24, 2015 at 10:16 AM Also has text capture within the results window itself. e.g. E-C --> CEDICT for the pinyin. Edit: mouse hover text capture works on many parts of MS Windows interface (tried start menu and in dialog boxes). Doesn't seem to capture text from PDF files. Quote

XiaoXi Posted June 11, 2015 at 03:51 AM Report Posted June 11, 2015 at 03:51 AM Wow I just came here to ask this kind of question but seems there isn't anything. Lingoes isn't much use 'cos its only for Windows. Really need a browser plugin only. I found its actually hard to find ANY online Chinese to Chinese dictionaries, never mind popup ones. Even Chinese people want to see English in their word definitions it seems. I'd like a dictionary with words that contain that character and definitions in Chinese. Quote
Altair Posted June 11, 2015 at 04:40 PM Report Posted June 11, 2015 at 04:40 PM I use Pleco on my iPad or iPhone for this functionality. The browser is somewhat basic, but then I get access to the full Pleco functionality, including Chinese-Chinese dictionaries. The only drawback, which is not negligible, is the lack of a desktop version. Once, they solve that challenge, I will be in heaven. Quote
XiaoXi Posted June 12, 2015 at 08:15 AM Report Posted June 12, 2015 at 08:15 AM Yes that's what I love to use too. The Guifan dictionary is great. It also has the advantage where if you look up a word you don't know and then the Chinese definition ALSO has words you don't know then you can look them up too. With a browser popup dictionary I fear it wouldn't be possible to do that. Quote
