imron Posted February 17, 2015 at 08:49 AM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 08:49 AM I just came across this site which has nice colourful breakdowns of characters and components and thought people might find it interesting:Character Pop 3 Quote
Yiheyuan2015 Posted February 17, 2015 at 09:34 AM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 09:34 AM Hi Imron, I had a look at it and it is indeed very interesting. Thanks much Quote

Guest realmayo Posted February 17, 2015 at 10:10 AM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 10:10 AM Hofmann's second comment? Quote
roddy Posted February 17, 2015 at 10:37 AM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 10:37 AM C'mon Hoff, don't leave us hanging... Quote
Shelley Posted February 17, 2015 at 10:41 AM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 10:41 AM Looks interesting. Thanks for sharing. Quote
Kobo-Daishi Posted February 17, 2015 at 11:20 AM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 11:20 AM I'd imagine Hofmann's talking about the inevitable discussion about the Heisig type method of coming up with short stories about the character components as a mnemonic for remembering how the character is written. Whether it's right or wrong to make up your own story, etc. Kobo. Quote
HerrPetersen Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:19 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:19 PM Are there any mistakes at first glance? (btw - the site is used in the "hanzi stats" plugin in anki.) Quote
imron Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:27 PM Author Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:27 PM I'm not a huge fan of stories, but I do think it's useful to be able to break down a character in to its component parts, and the site seems to do a reasonable job of that from what I've seen. Quote
Shelley Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:32 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:32 PM Are there any mistakes at first glance? Not so much a mistake as an omission, there is no image for the top of 有 here. http://characterpop.com/explode/%E6%9C%89 Not sure if it is me not able to show it or its just not there. I can see all the rest I have looked at so i don't see why it would be different. I like the hanzicraft link, much more information. Quote
Shelley Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:44 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:44 PM Interesting, it is also not displayed correctly on the hanzicraft link. Quote
roddy Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:44 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:44 PM It's there. Also: "the flesh in my left hand created a blood clot that looked like a moon" Some people shouldn't be allowed to be creative... Quote
HerrPetersen Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:45 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:45 PM The creator of hanzicraft is responsible for a ?java-script? framework for decomposing characters: https://github.com/nieldlr/hanzi . I guess that character pop uses the same library. I also seem to remember that there were a lot of mistaked in it. 1 Quote
imron Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:46 PM Author Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:46 PM @Shelley, What do you mean? It shows just fine for me. Also, it's also not an image, but a character - this one in particular. If you visit that page and under 'your browser' it is blank or a square box, then the problem is you don't have a font with that character installed. Quote
Shelley Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:49 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:49 PM It shows correctly on that page. In "my browser" shows the correct character. Quote
imron Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:55 PM Author Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 12:55 PM "the flesh in my left hand created a blood clot that looked like a moon" How does this mean 'have'. Some people shouldn't be allowed to be creative... Show 'em how it's done roddy. I notice Jamie and his magic spoon have not been mentioned yet. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:04 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:04 PM I'd imagine Hofmann's talking about the inevitable discussion about You started it Quote
li3wei1 Posted February 17, 2015 at 02:13 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 02:13 PM I think he's waiting for OneEye to come along and tell us it's all wrong. Quote
