abcdefg Posted March 4, 2015 at 12:45 AM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 12:45 AM Anybody who spends much time on the Chinese internet been running into "duang1?" Interesting story: A newly minted word. http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=17913 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/11446237/New-Chinese-character-threatens-to-break-the-internet.html Quote
anonymoose Posted March 4, 2015 at 01:58 AM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 01:58 AM The question is (and I suspect the answer is no), will this character catch on permanently, and will it be included in the typable character set? I suspect this fad will very quickly blow over. Quote
mikelove Posted March 4, 2015 at 02:08 AM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 02:08 AM There's actually a massive backlog of Unicode CJK character set additions right now - the IRG is way behind schedule on the planned CJK Unified Extension E and Extension F - so while this would be a longshot at any time, it's even more of one now. 1 Quote
tooironic Posted March 4, 2015 at 04:37 AM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 04:37 AM Does anyone else find it strange that Language Log blocks users in mainland China from reading its articles? Suffice to say, I only read the Telegraph piece. Quote
li3wei1 Posted March 4, 2015 at 06:41 AM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 06:41 AM Oh, please. Don't they have enough characters already? Quote
imron Posted March 4, 2015 at 08:04 AM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 08:04 AM Does anyone else find it strange that Language Log blocks users in mainland China Does language log block users or does the GFW? Quote
xiaokaka Posted March 4, 2015 at 10:40 AM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 10:40 AM Language log is not blocked by the GFW (at least not for me, but it has been very slow recently). Quote
liuzhou Posted March 4, 2015 at 12:13 PM Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 12:13 PM Not blocked here either. Quote
abcdefg Posted March 4, 2015 at 12:38 PM Author Report Posted March 4, 2015 at 12:38 PM In any case, I'm not likely to use "duang" very much since I'm unable to type it. Quote
tooironic Posted March 5, 2015 at 12:22 AM Report Posted March 5, 2015 at 12:22 AM Well, for some reason everytime I try to access it in mainland China it comes up with a message saying "You are banned". Quote
imron Posted March 5, 2015 at 01:15 AM Report Posted March 5, 2015 at 01:15 AM Perhaps they were getting a lot of spam from someone who used the same IP address that you are now using and so they banned the IP (or a range of IP addresses). I'd send them an email about it. Quote
tallcity Posted March 20, 2015 at 07:25 PM Report Posted March 20, 2015 at 07:25 PM From what I saw of Chan's shampoo commercial, "Duang" is the effect the shampoo had on his hair. Like, before the shampoo, his hair was flat. After the shampoo, it had a lot of volume, very puffy, his hair was like "duauauauang." Quote
gato Posted March 21, 2015 at 12:43 AM Report Posted March 21, 2015 at 12:43 AM I haven't seen anybody using "duang" in the last few weeks. This fad appears to be fading out. Quote
abcdefg Posted March 21, 2015 at 04:55 AM Author Report Posted March 21, 2015 at 04:55 AM This fad appears to be fading out. That was fast. Faster than young stylish women's clothing fashions. Quote
