New Members ginawilson Posted March 16, 2015 at 08:58 PM New Members Report Share Posted March 16, 2015 at 08:58 PM I am self-studying Chinese, and I am pretty sure I make grammar mistakes out the whazoo. So, are these sentences even remotely correct? 我觉得体操运动员是最强壮。 我觉得足球运动员打得很好。 Is it okay to use 是 before saying something is 最 [adjective]? Sorry for my n00b questions. tommy175 Posted March 17, 2015 at 04:30 AM Report Share Posted March 17, 2015 at 04:30 AM Of course, Not.... To modify the sentence, you should put a "的" in the end of the sentence. 我觉得体操运动员是最强壮的 To remove the "是" is also OK, but not that natural
Bird in a Forest Posted April 4, 2015 at 03:49 AM Report Share Posted April 4, 2015 at 03:49 AM 是 can only be used to connect two nouns together. However, your sentences are ungrammatical because you are connecting an adjective to a noun, which is not possible. By adding 的 at the end you are turning the adjective into a noun.E.g. 我觉得体操运动员是最强壮的。I feel these gymnasts are the strongest ones (the strongest gymnasts). The "gymnasts" is implied by adding 的 to the adjective. You could remove the 是, but it would sound strange.
