brennan Posted April 7, 2015 at 01:24 PM Report Share Posted April 7, 2015 at 01:24 PM Just want to clarify. In my book there is the following passage. “有了这笔遗产,21世纪的人们就不必再到那些河湖里捕鱼,从而也就少了制造渔船和鱼网的麻烦。有了这笔遗产,许多人就不必学游泳,从而也就少了被水淹死的危险。有了这笔遗产,许多人就可以一种莫名其妙的小病而住进美丽的疗养院,从而把繁重的工作摆脱掉。” So repeating the first part of the phrase simply adds emphasis to what you are trying to convey overall? 889 Posted April 7, 2015 at 01:38 PM Report Share Posted April 7, 2015 at 01:38 PM I'm not sure I'd call it emphasis as such, but striving for a certain literary or rhetorical effect. Like MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech. Repetition is a rhetorical device, and I think this author is simply using it to make his writing seem more elegant.

Lu Posted April 7, 2015 at 02:41 PM Report Share Posted April 7, 2015 at 02:41 PM Agreed, it's rhetorical/part of the author's style. Read Liu Zhenyun if you want a large amount of this.
wushucrab20 Posted April 7, 2015 at 05:09 PM Report Share Posted April 7, 2015 at 05:09 PM I would recommend sticking with the series you are using through the end. I thought it was challenging but very useful and interesting. I remember the specific passage you have posted, and I still refer back to those texts to refresh the vocabulary and expressions that are used within them.
