"frog" in Cantonese?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a friend who's a Cantonese speaker from the city of Zhongshan, north of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province. She told me the Cantonese word for "frog" is "gop na". Having studied Thai, I recognized this, to my surprise, as กบนา ("gop naa"), which means "field frog".

But when I look up "frog" in the dictionary, I get "cheng wa".

Could "gop na" be a word borrowed from a Tai language?
