edelweis Posted April 18, 2015 at 08:55 PM Report Share Posted April 18, 2015 at 08:55 PM I am not an expert of seal script, but it looks like variations of the same character doesn't it? Perhaps you should post a close-up of the vertical line on the left, that might be the title...
Shelley Posted April 18, 2015 at 09:49 PM Report Share Posted April 18, 2015 at 09:49 PM Wow, you think it might be all the same character?! Is it some sort of practice or exercise, or is it a bit like a sampler? is this sort of thing usual? it is very interesting, but I know nothing at all about it. Have been watching this topic hoping someone will know.
889 Posted April 18, 2015 at 11:52 PM Report Share Posted April 18, 2015 at 11:52 PM Obviously not the the same character. 福 is in there a lot in many fanciful variations, but so are 寿 and other characters.

889 Posted April 19, 2015 at 08:14 AM Report Share Posted April 19, 2015 at 08:14 AM The left side tells us it was painted 戊辰年元旦 New Year's 1988. It's signed 雪峰 Xue Feng.Unraveling the text, if there's anything there to unravel, means unraveling quite a few characters. Not really worth the time for what I suspect is essentially a decorative wall piece..
Shelley Posted April 19, 2015 at 12:02 PM Report Share Posted April 19, 2015 at 12:02 PM As it is relatively recent, I Googled the artist's name, and got a few results. A bit more searching might turn up the actual artist and then the question could be put to him. This might be him https://www.artsy.net/artist/xue-feng or this http://www.artlinkart.com/en/artist/overview/1d0hrup Thanks for making me look Even if this is not the same Xue Feng i am glad to have found this artist, quite like the look of what I have seen so far. 889 Posted April 19, 2015 at 12:32 PM Report Share Posted April 19, 2015 at 12:32 PM The second XF was born in 1973; I doubt this was painted when he was 15. The problem is that XF is the sort of generic name that gets signed to those masterpieces out of 大芬, and it screams "Nobody." I'm pretty sure I saw quite a few works like this hanging in art shops catering to tourists in the '90s. The other part of the inscription's a bit of a mystery. It looks like it could be 和门居XX, but what is XX? An upside-down 平?And what could that mean? Maybe it was inscribed to a foreign buyer. Any Hermans in your family, OP? Finally, I'd suggest the OP look closely at this and verify whether it's an original or a print. The enlargment shows breaks in the calligraphy of the sort you might expect on a print but not an original.

889 Posted April 20, 2015 at 08:33 AM Report Share Posted April 20, 2015 at 08:33 AM Yes, that looks like it. He does sign "Feng" as 峰 on your piece but as 峯 on that piece, but this link shows him using 峰 as well. http://pm.findart.com.cn/bigimg.php?aid=490509 (Not to say this or that is or is not actually by Duan Xuefeng, given the extent of copies in the market.) dwq Posted April 20, 2015 at 03:52 PM Report Share Posted April 20, 2015 at 03:52 PM Note that 戊辰年 can be 1988 minus any multiples of 60 years, though the picture doesn't seem to be that old.
scottt Posted May 9, 2015 at 05:22 PM Report Share Posted May 9, 2015 at 05:22 PM 松门居士...... instead of 和门居X ( 门 is the simplified charachter of 門 )峰 is the same as 峯 According to the seal (the middle photo on the 1st post), XF's last name is 楊 (Yang)
