realnames Posted April 22, 2015 at 03:45 PM Report Posted April 22, 2015 at 03:45 PM I wonder if anyone could help me? I am trying to find out the meaning of the name 李慶孫 (I think this becomes 李庆孙 in simplified script; anglicised as Lǐqìngsūn). I'm afraid I have no knowledge of Chinese whatsoever - I've looked up the characters in online dictionaries, but I'm not sure which translations are appropriate or whether the characters have any specific meanings, connotations or nuances when they are combined. I'm keen to find out for a number of reasons, but not least because this happens to be my name (or at least the Hanja version of my Korean name), so any thoughts or guidance would be very gratefully received - especially if you could explain them to me like I'm five Quote
tooironic Posted April 23, 2015 at 01:49 PM Report Posted April 23, 2015 at 01:49 PM 李 (Lǐ) is one of the most common surnames in China, and in the world. Its literal meaning is "plum", though when it acts as a family name no one really associates it with that.庆 (qìng) means "to celebrate".孙 (sūn) means "grandson" or "descendant". You asked whether, combined, the name had any particular connotation. All that comes to my mind is the literal meaning - "celebrate [one's] grandsons/descendants". Hope that helps. 3 Quote
