Flickserve Posted April 26, 2015 at 11:01 AM Report Posted April 26, 2015 at 11:01 AM Hi, Sorry to post about Anki but I really need some help about setting it up and have read the manual again. I am getting desperate about learning the new words and keeping them organised and able to put on a portable device. This is what I want it to do: Front card: Hanzi Back card: English translation Have additional fields such as pinyin, sound file, extra example sentences (e.g. I got the the word from a news article I studied). All these additional notes appear on the back card in my current setup Now, I can do that and test the Hanzi. That's fine. Excellent. But I also want to reverse (flip) the card so only the English comes up (no sound, no pinyin, no extra sentences). Then, after trying to guess the chinese, Anki will then show the Hanzi plus all the other notes. In my current setup, the back card is flipped so it will show the the pinyin, and play the sound file straight away which is not what I want. Someone suggested that I setup another deck and card in reverse but this is double the work and double the memory requirements. I admit it is one solution but a very inelegant method that takes up a lot of time. There must be another method? I am not computer illiterate. This is on a Windows 7 system if that helps. Please help!!! Quote

querido Posted April 26, 2015 at 01:04 PM Report Posted April 26, 2015 at 01:04 PM You said: "Front card: Hanzi, Back card: English translation". No, that is just one card, Front: Hanzi, Back: English translation (+ other fields). You need another card, Front: English, Back: Hanzi (+ other fields). Go to Add, Cards..., and near the top right is a "+" button to make the new card. Then set up the fields you want. Quote
querido Posted April 26, 2015 at 01:43 PM Report Posted April 26, 2015 at 01:43 PM One more thing. In the thread title you referred to flipping a note. No. A "field" is, for example, Hanzi. Another one is for example English. A "note" is the collection of these fields. You create and maintain these at Add, Fields.... Then you go to Add, Cards... to set up the cards as you wish to see them when testing. When you go to Add, Cards..., you probably didn't notice the "+" button and the tabs across the top. Quote
Flickserve Posted April 27, 2015 at 09:37 AM Author Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 09:37 AM Hi pross and querido, That really helps. I attach two pictures of my setup - not sure if you can see it. Card 1 which is Hanzi to English (1st pic) Card 2 which is English to Hanzi (2nd pic) OK. For changing between the two cards, I don't have to flip. I have to change to the backward cards and have a new card order. Is that how you do it? Quote
querido Posted April 27, 2015 at 10:33 AM Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 10:33 AM That looks good! I don't understand your question. For every word you add now there will be two cards added to the deck, one will look like Card 1 and the other like Card 2. The front of each card will look like "Front Preview", and the back will look like "Back Preview". These two cards will be in the same deck. (If you want the two cards to go to separate decks, go to Add, Cards..., select one of the cards, and at the bottom go to More, Deck Override.) Quote
Flickserve Posted April 27, 2015 at 11:11 PM Author Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 11:11 PM OK. You are still helping me lots! Within the deck itself, I see now that I create a card 1 and card 2. I wasn't sure how to change the order to being tested on only the card 2 list. From the video link, I see now how anki automates it for the user. I understand how to create a new card to go into a new deck. I did this with a new word, 這些 When I go into the browser for my original deck, the card 2 for 這些 doesn't appear in the list. If I click on 'cards', the card 2 is still there. How do I make it appear in my browser list (as it does for 大床上 and 最近) ? Quote
querido Posted April 27, 2015 at 11:40 PM Report Posted April 27, 2015 at 11:40 PM I'm sorry I don't have time to help you now. You really must study the manual, sooner or later. Quote
Flickserve Posted April 28, 2015 at 10:53 PM Author Report Posted April 28, 2015 at 10:53 PM I did look for the answer in the manual (a few times) but couldn't work out the answer. I have actually read the whole manual a couple of times and certain sections more than that. :wall And then for the original question, that's why I opened this thread But thanks for the first answer - it helped massively. I had already read the links before posted by pross but still couldn't work it out. Hence, creating this thread! I had also searched on the internet and asked on the anki board but couldn't get much headway. I see that I had a misinterpretation of something that made it difficult. You helped by giving a slightly angle on the problem that assist my comprehension of Anki. Quote
querido Posted April 29, 2015 at 07:44 AM Report Posted April 29, 2015 at 07:44 AM "I understand how to create a new card to go into a new deck. I did this with a new word, 這些" Now Card 2 for 這些 should be in that new deck. "When I go into the browser for my original deck, the card 2 for 這些 doesn't appear in the list." Right. It's in the new deck. I guess the only problem is those two Card 2s that did not move to the new deck (I don't know why). Move them manually by highlighting them and then "Change Deck". Then all of your Card 2s will be in the new deck. Quote
Flickserve Posted May 2, 2015 at 03:04 PM Author Report Posted May 2, 2015 at 03:04 PM Thanks Querido! Now entering words and sentences in Anki and hopefully will improve in word retention. I am going through a stagnant patch in learning. Quote
querido Posted May 2, 2015 at 05:08 PM Report Posted May 2, 2015 at 05:08 PM Don't forget listening and speaking. Good luck. Quote
Flickserve Posted May 11, 2015 at 04:11 PM Author Report Posted May 11, 2015 at 04:11 PM Thanks again Querido. I am making better progress after understanding Anki a bit better. Of course I would like to speak more, if I could remember more vocabulary :-) Quote
