CodyFarmer Posted May 1, 2015 at 07:15 PM Report Posted May 1, 2015 at 07:15 PM Hi all, I ran across this chunk and don't know how to process it. After extensive internet searching, grammar wikis, etc. I am afraid I have to ask for help. In addition, could anyone provide a meaningful resource for understanding phrases like these? Either online or text? Thank you! Quote
Lu Posted May 1, 2015 at 07:45 PM Report Posted May 1, 2015 at 07:45 PM 'it and its'. I'd expect this to be part of a sentence, like for example 我有两个狗。小的叫莱希。它和它的母亲都很聪明。 'I have two dogs. The little one is named Lassie. It and its mother are both very smart.' If you can't find a chunk of text, it sometimes helps to look for smaller parts. In this case, 它/和/它的 might have worked. I hope this helps! 2 Quote
max_power Posted May 27, 2015 at 05:44 AM Report Posted May 27, 2015 at 05:44 AM 它 is used for non-human subject. And 它 is not simply same as "it". In english, you can use "it" for a newborn like: it is a girl. But in chinese, you can't use 它 like: 它是一个女孩. For a unknown gender newborn, you should use 他 instead. Quote
