In chinese there are a few different wrods that mean "explane", but I'm not always sure in which case use which of them.

What are differences between and when to use 说明,  解释, 讲解 ??

For example, how to say: "Teacher explaned the text to students" ?

“老师给学生们解释课文“ Is it OK??

My feeling is 解釋 and 說明 are basically the same if you're talking about translating the word "explain" into Chinese... except maybe 說明 is more formal. When in doubt I would use 解釋. @coolnicholas is right though that 講解 is more appropriate in this context, since it is a teacher who is doing the explaining.

解释 means "to explain" as in: "please explain the meaning of this" and also "to justify" as in: "he should explain/justify his actions"

说明 means "to explain" in the sense of "to clarify", "to give examples", "to comment on" and also "to illustrate" (as in: his actions illustrate that he is a bad person)

I agree with Yorin's answer.

讲解 is usually used in examples like 老师讲解课文, 'cause it has denotation of teaching by exemplifying and/or expounding. Also 讲解 is quite formal or written, the spoken version of 讲解 can be simply 讲 : 老师给学生讲课文
