Kamille Posted May 16, 2015 at 07:51 AM Report Share Posted May 16, 2015 at 07:51 AM Yeah that's the one. Here it is in an C-E dictionary for OP: http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdrst=1&wdqb=%E6%85%89 The meaning is not bad, so. It's only a bit random. Problem is more with the calligraphy, which is very awkward. Now if you like it you can keep it anyway. I mean, who will judge you because the Chinese character on your tattoo was poorly drawn? The meaning is ok and if the rest of the tattoo (we can't see a lot on the picture) looks harmonious, then it's still ok. I mean how many people can read Chinese and see that it's poorly drawn in your circle of acquaintances? (Plus that's kind of very old character that's not used anymore and never actually was used a lot in the first place, I'm pretty sure even educated native speakers would need to check it in a dictionary).
Tiana Posted May 16, 2015 at 08:14 AM Report Share Posted May 16, 2015 at 08:14 AM The OP earlier mentioned lasering it off. Having now seen the tattoo, I'd second that option. It's nothing to do with the meaning of the tattoo, it's the way it was executed that makes it not worth having. And if you later want another tattoo of a Chinese character, do try to find some tattoo artist who knows a bit about Chinese/tattooing Chinese.
Flickserve Posted May 16, 2015 at 03:34 PM Report Share Posted May 16, 2015 at 03:34 PM Could it mean "to endure"? I agree the quality of the calligraphy is rather poor but only somebody used to seeing chinese characters would know that.
vellocet Posted May 17, 2015 at 07:17 AM Report Share Posted May 17, 2015 at 07:17 AM Cheer up! The OP isn't the only one to have this tattoo. Someone else got it, you can see because there's no lace design present. Found it on an image search for the character, something that is usually educational, occasionally useless. rezaf Posted May 17, 2015 at 08:01 AM Report Share Posted May 17, 2015 at 08:01 AM It's better to remove it. The top part looks 亡 like but it should be 玄. The bottom looks like 用 but it should be 田. That's why I said I wasn't sure because there is another obscure character that looks like that㥔). I don't know anything about tattoos but how difficult is it for these tattoo artists to copy the characters properly?
Tiana Posted May 17, 2015 at 08:11 AM Report Share Posted May 17, 2015 at 08:11 AM how difficult is it for these tattoo artists to copy the characters properly? I think it's quite difficult to copy characters in a meaningful way, if one doesn't know the language or isn't familiar with it. Since each character is composed of a number of strokes going in some definite directions, it's not easy for the un-initiated to tell which difference in the copy is salient and which a non-issue. Kamille Posted May 17, 2015 at 08:49 AM Report Share Posted May 17, 2015 at 08:49 AM @rezaf: I agree for the top part of 㥔, the strokes are very bold, as a whole, and those of the top part got almost entirely blended together because of it. But the bottom part is clearly a poorly drawn 田. If it was meant to be 用 or worse, 月, then it should be called awfully drawn, to an extent that would make the character almost impossible to decipher. That's why it can't be 㥔.
Amho607 Posted May 18, 2015 at 05:22 AM Author Report Share Posted May 18, 2015 at 05:22 AM I agree with everyone. I think lassering it off may be my best bet. What's weird is if you saw the tat as a whole you would think two separate artist did it (if you could even call the guy who did this an artist!) all my other tats are so amazing so it's so disappointing to have this eye sore, but at least only my Vietnamese husband now sees it! Lol!!
Amho607 Posted May 18, 2015 at 05:25 AM Author Report Share Posted May 18, 2015 at 05:25 AM And someone mentioned who in my circle actually knows Chinese...well as irony would have it my daughter is becoming fluent in Chinese!! And the universe laughs at me again! Lol
Lu Posted May 18, 2015 at 08:57 AM Report Share Posted May 18, 2015 at 08:57 AM If you know a good tattoo artist, you can also consider covering it or converting it into a different tattoo. To my knowledge, lasering is very painful and often doesn't really work, so you still have a shadow of the old tattoo. Or you can just keep it, the meaning is not exactly what you meant but still fits the occasion, and when you got it you had reasons better than 'I was drunk and this looked pretty'.
