I don't remember

What's the best way to say "I don't remember" in Chinese?

I found 我不记得 and 我不记得了

Is one better than the other? Thanks.

I'd say the 了in this case expresses a change of state, i.e. up until recently you remembered, you just forgot. 

我不记得 doesn't seem to have this connotation, so I'd say it depends on the situation which one is better to use (though if anyone disagrees feel free to correct me).

I usually say 我记不住 --- is this OK?

我記不住 is in the present tense, so it's means that you currently are having trouble committing something to memory.

 

我不記得 is equivalent to "I don't remember" and is an appropriate answer to someone asking if you remember something.

 

我不記得了 is more like "I don't remember anymore." 我忘記了 is a more straightforward way of saying "I forgot."

I remember there is also this "我记不得", but as I hardly use Chinese now, I can't remember what it means exactly.

Could it mean something similar to 我记不住 ?

 

PS: Just recall another similar expression: 我记不得了

I'm confident that the meanings of all the above mentioned expressions can be worked out on the basis of grammar. The difficulty is the variations in actual use would throw all such logics into total confusion!
