案件

I slowly getting used to the Chinese use of 2 part structures, with a format A 【XXX】B, where A and B work together, but in this case, it seems very strange to split a noun apart for the numbering of said noun. I assume 案件 is a noun here meaning 'legal case'. In the this short text, 张先生 mentions 案件 4 times, but only splits it up once.

He does not, for instance, say '案著作权件‘ or '案竞争件‘.

Could he also have said something like  '2007年共审理的知识产权案件2900余‘? Does he say it like that because it is shorter, directer?

记者:去年北京共受理了多少知识产权案?主要涉及哪些方面?

张先生:2007年共审理知识产权案2900余件,其中著作权案件站案件总数的65%,竞争案件的比例为5%,其余为商标权和专利权案件。

Would you say 他给我美金500余?Sounds bad doesn't it, because your mind expects to hear a measure word there at the end. That 件 is the measure word in 知识产权案2900余件.

I think you're confused by 案件, since it includes a character that can sometimes act as a measure word. Standing all by itself, 案件 can refer to a legal case. But when you refer to a particular kind of legal case, you can just add 案 alone to the description of the case. So nothing's "split" as you call it in 知识产权案2900余件, because 知识产权案 means "intellectual property cases" and 件 is the measure word for those cases. Of course, depending on context, it's also possible to add 案件 instead of just 件, and make that 知识产权案件, but that would make for an awkward-sounding sentence here with 件 as the measure word. That's not a problem, though, for the last sentence in your example.

The above two users have already answered the question.

Another example:

房间 room

一间房间 a room

两间房间 two rooms

双人房 double room

双人房两间 two double rooms

Well, when she came by, after she stopped laughing and muttering '笨蛋的老外‘, the gf explained it to me, but I said would you really say ‘2900件案‘ shouldn't that be 2900宗案件?Chinese is very flexible in its use of classifiers, apparently '知识产权案2900个‘ would also be acceptable.

Earlier in the text, the selfsame 张先生 refers to '知识产权案件‘。

I am not paranoid. I know the Chinese only do this to confuse me! They are succeeding!
